Reconsidering my options...

Well this morning I've been considering a big move. I'm quite happy with my job, it's a great trade to have and it affords me some luxuries that I enjoy.

But job searching online, planning for future possibilities, I've come across a lot of positions available in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly Aus/NZ. The average pay for the position is more than anything that could be offered in the U.K. It would appear, that my options are wide open when my contract comes to an end with my current employer.

Have any of you considered or committed to such a move?

Yep! I'm glad we did, too. There's nothing like living in a different place for a while, traveling, experiencing thing you wouldn't have previously considered.

Just keep in mind that it's not all one big holiday. You'll likely miss home a bit at some point, you have to get used to a new culture, moving itself can be stressful and expensive, and you'll always be the immigrant in your new location (which come with its own set of annoyances).

I recommend it, though, if you're in a position to be able to.

I think this one of them things where you need to take a leap or faith, or risk regretting it later in life.

Personally i wouldn't because I have young kids and me and the mother have split up, otherwise I'd already be at the airport waiting for my flight

Absolutely. There are a lot of factors to think about with a big move and I feel better knowing that the opportunities are available for my particular trade.

If you have no one depending on you then go for it, don't forget, you can always come back if it doesn't work out. You miss a 100% of the opportunities you don't take. Corny but true

Do it. I have lived in 3 countries (3 continents) for 18yrs/6yrs/12yrs respectively.. Opportunity and experience I am so grateful for. NZ was one of them.

You are at the right age.

I think if you have no ties here it's one of those opportunities you have to try. Life is full of missed opportunity and regret. I wouldn't have jumped at the chance years ago. Now it's not an option x

I've heard that NZ is the better of the two for work life balance.

People think Aussies are always on the beach or playing sport but I think they are chained to their desks and stuck in traffic on shit roads mostly

Central

Spent a lot of time living overseas. An important factor is what responsibilities you may have for others here. Oz and NZ are a very long way from here, making visiting tougher than closer countries - as much as I love both of these.

The cost of living in Australia/NZ is much higher so any wage increase is essentially negated by increased living expenses.

It's a completely different way of life too, one you could possibly prefer but without experiencing the environment in some way eg as a tourist to get a sense of things and decide if it's for you or not..

Could be a costly and ill advised move you live to regret.

I would take a short term contract before I made the full move.

I don't regret things I've done, only the opportunities that I never took.
