"They were shit " And a very odd subject for people to get steamed up about. They were a band, they aren't any longer.

"It was more about whether people are aware of things that have had a big impact in our culture. Whether it's a pop group or something else, it's the fact that some seem oblivious to these things that I personally find a bit weird. " There are some things more important to people than others though. Maybe the Spice Girls is an odd thing to not have heard of, but there are things you would be familiar with that I won't have heard of, and vice versa. Doesn't mean we are not both well rounded individuals who contribute to society though.

" I don't find that weird, there are lots of things I am not interested in so I switch off when I hear about it. OK I might have heard about it but I wouldn't know anything about it. On the other hand the things I am interested in I know a lot about.

"Going from the first thread, I would say they were shit but even if I didn't have kids at the time who were into them I reckon you would have had to be a hermit not to hear about them at some point. " I couldn't tell you one person or group in the top ten currently so does that make me an hermit then? But what I do know is that if culture is in anyway linked to a superficial fleeting man-made group, some much for girl power eh?, then I want to and will happily go live in a cave.

Wyrdwoman on the other thread mentioned something she was very interested in, MST3K or something like that. I'd never heard of it so I Googled it to find out about it because it could be something I would be interested in but I'd only know that if I was aware of it.

( I went and googled too ) But once you have decided you are not interested in a certain subject then it is easy to avoid, for me anyway. Obviously for the people who say they don't read papers, watch telly or use the internet to learn whats going on in the world, they won't be introduced to anything new. For me being a nosey mare and get bored pretty easy that type of life wouldn't suit me as I am always wanting to learn about new things.

The world would be a boring place if we were all the same. Well said! " I don't think that's in dispute in general. There was just some genuine incredulity on living during the heyday of The Spice Girls in the UK and being completely oblivious to it. A further genuine item of interest was a lack of awareness as to who the current PM was -- and whilst people have every right to be oblivious to both items and that is absolutely their right, there is also the right for others to be incredulous, bemused and even alarmed by these facts. Having that opinion makes one no less appreciative of diversity. That's a ridiculous notion to think it does.

Some people do live under rocks. I worked with a couple of people who didn't have a television and lived quite insular lives. I have a long term partner who, at the age of 32 had never stepped foot on a council estate.

I prefer to read books over newspapers (well really both are a work of fiction these days) I download the programmes I like as I cannot stand channel hopping. The only radio station is listened to wad team rock radio as it was purely rock music but has gone bust (well the magazine company that owned it did) and occassionally I will put on classic fm. Pop culture is important to some and not to others the same as everything else in the world. There will be lots of important things going on in the world that many dont pay attention to" I didn't miss that point either. I was debating the concept of being oblivious to a "zeitgeist" of that size at the time. And my incredulity of choosing to be unaware of who the PM is as the debate went on to discuss. I was genuinely surprised at the remark made.

Some can't see past the "I'm not interested in it therefore it isn't important". And some of us were trying not to make it personal and steering away from focusing on one individual.

"Awareness is actually defined as a concern about and well-informed interest in a particular situation or development Acknowledge meant is the acceptance of a fact I acknowledge the spice girls existed I have no awareness of them they didn't interest me enough to concern myself with them " If you want to get into semantics then there's two key definitions of awareness -- knowledge or perception of a situation or fact. and concern about and well-informed interest in a particular situation or development. I think it's already been clearly stated that many were using the former, you were using the latter. Hence everyone is in agreement.

"And pop culture from the original OP was in the discussion in the contect as something everyone should have a good conscious awareness of therefore the latter definition is clearly the context it should have been taken in That was seemingly lost on the many " I disagree. I thought the first definition was the one that most were using in the original thread.

Most yes that's why I said most but not really the OP of it in my opinion " But it's your opinion and subjective interpretation -- which is fine, but the point is it's been clear how people have been debating their points. So are you now agreeing that in using the first definition then it's a surprise that someone may state a lack of awareness of The Spice Girls?

"Awareness is actually defined as a concern about and well-informed interest in a particular situation or development Acknowledge meant is the acceptance of a fact I acknowledge the spice girls existed I have no awareness of them they didn't interest me enough to concern myself with them If you want to get into semantics then there's two key definitions of awareness -- knowledge or perception of a situation or fact. and concern about and well-informed interest in a particular situation or development. I think it's already been clearly stated that many were using the former, you were using the latter. Hence everyone is in agreement. " Absolutely.

"But most will go for the most literal and obvious interpretation of a subject and run with it and rarely try to think outside of the box " Who is not thinking outside of the box? You could posit that anyone isn't by stating their opinion. That's rather daft.

I read it that they were surprised on hearing that in the other thread, and from there opened a genuine discussion. I'm the same way I joined the thread on reading your statement re choosing to not be conscious of who the PM is, in genuine surprise. Surely if you genuinely felt it to be a personal attack you'd have reported the thread as per other occasions where one may do that, or ask the OP their intent rather than assuming knowledge of it and perhaps totally misinterpreting and malaigning their intent. Forgive I'll have to check if you did that, but I'm guessing maybe not. It's really important to not put words in people's mouths -- but that's just my opinion.

"Don't see why people have to be so shocked their lack of knowledge of the spice girls or anything else as no bearing on your life accept the diversity of people, Instead of referring tin them as odd, ostriches with their head stuck in the sand or living in a bubble To some that have been referred to as the above how would you like to be called by then as sheep to pop culture or any similar reference because you have a knowledge of it they don't? " But they're allowed to be shocked, if it shocks them. Again the word odd has a few interpretations too. The frame of opinion being presented just countered yours and some others -- you're adding an attack into it that the person who used the word odd has already stated was not about being personal.

I honestly don't know how it can have been missed and I didn't go out of my way to look for things about it either

"'Aware' does not have to mean know about fully, be interested in or understand. To say you were vaguely aware of something shows you were aware, which was the point being made by those suggesting it's somewhat tenuous to not have been aware. " Most of us understand that. I suspect that those who claim to have a different interpretation of the word understand that too. It's interesting when there is questioning of the meaning of words. The old "oh yes I meant the other more obscure meaning of the word because I don't like to accept the general meaning of the word that everyone else understands"

"People not being aware of brexit or the current ruling party does affect people's lives . If you (anyone) isn't aware of these kinds of things then I assume they aren't voting . And non voters can sway an election /referendum either way . People can obviously choose to live their lives how they see fit . But don't complain about nothing changing etc if you aren't even taking part in the discussions " But what scares is if these people do actually vote without knowing what they are voting for, take the current situation in Scotland, they reduced the age to 16 to be able to vote, why is that? Also we were promised in was going to be a once in a generation referendum yet here we are less than 3 years later and they are trying to push for another one. So please if your not aware of what is going on and don't really give a shit what the outcome might be, please for gods sake do not put an X in a box you have no idea if that is what you want!

Happy for you to use quotes to show me, as disrespecting has not been my intent and I'm happy to be challenged on this. I apologise if you have felt I have, but are you able to understand that discussing and challenging inconsistencies in your positioning in an attempt to better understand your opinion may not actually mean an intent to disrespect? On another note, can you reflect on your posts to me and see where some may be interpreted as being disrespectful, and do you have any comment on those?
