£27,200 is the average earnings for people. So are you above average, average or not a bats chance hell of being average? I'm a bat! And even if I chose to be at a manager in my career, I'd still be a way off of average.

I can't agree with that. If your salary barely covers housing costs and utilities there's very little room for manoeuvre.

We are way above, having said that we are no better off than most, and I'd say our friends and colleagues are the same, we all don't have an extravagant lifestyle, we live to our means, as does everyone I suppose, to add to that though, it has meant that I can be a stay at home mum, for which I am extremely grateful,I very much realise how lucky that makes me Mrs blue eyes

We're above. When I (Mr) was younger I was obsessed with earning more and more, thinking my salary reflected my worth but now I'm older I realise I love what I do, we live comfortably but not extravagantly and we are happy so that'll do for me. I've know people on massive 6 figure salaries who are miserable as sin and never have the time (or friends and family) to enjoy it...I also know people earning waaay less than the average who are some of the happiest people I know. It's about balance I suppose

I'll be honest, I'm looking forward to a full time wage, after a few very tight months where I've made sure my children have eaten a proper meal before me, and stuff like that but we have a happy life so hopefully it will all be better balanced now.

We're both just below but that means between us we can pretty much fund our life we chose to move to a lovely area and have a car each is pretty essential for the jobs we do so it costs us more that wipes out any financial benefits of us both working. This country is geared towards debt and getting the working class to pay for everything.

We're both above average. We have no kids and a relatively low mortgage, neither if us has any debt except the mortgage. We get to treat ourselves when we want, but neither of us are extravagant.

8 years ago I was quite a bit above it and that was set to only increase. However I made the decision to follow a different path. I may be poor but I've taught my boys the importance of following your heart. I also now get to go to work with the purpose of making things better for people, not lining some corporates pockets.

Sounds like it will be Hun we've been there too- where we had bills but literally no sign of any wage coming in...grim times indeed! But things changed for us and it sounds like they are for you xx

Making a real difference to help people is worth much more then the average £££ ...

I am currently above and may even be fully mortage/debt free before Christmas.

It is tough, but all we can do is try our best.

This is part of the reason I quit my job last year - average salaries in the UK are fairly low and it didn't seem worth it for me to keep working (especially since the value of the £ compared to the $ has fallen such that any real savings would be wiped out when we move back to the US).

Money tends to be relative anyway - the more you earn the bigger a mortgage you may have, you spend more on a slightly better car, buy more branded goods, spend a little bit more on a holiday - does it make you any happier though?

In my opinion a true measure of ones wealth is how happy you are. People that are genuinely happy in their lives are the wealthiest of us all!

I could be closer to the average if I wanted to be, but currently I don't. It is not about me at the moment. Quality of life and location are winning. Even if I am miles from the fab friends I would like to be in regular contact with. When it comes to 'my' time I'll decide whether I want to chase that dream job or keep my dream location.

My annual income is over 19k below the national average

As a full time carer for my mum i get carer's allowance and work part time at a supermarket.

Although on the face of it earning under 8k a year looks like i'm very poor the reality is rather different. As a live in carer i don't have any bills to pay (apart from my phone) so it is all disposable income. Most people earning the average would love to have £150 a week left over after they pay their rent/mortgage and everything else.

But I chose the job I do & not for the money. It has it's own rewards.

Since becoming a single parent I've learnt to budget better too.

Me & my son have a good life, he doesn't really want for much and by working really hard for 12 months I managed to get myself virtually debt free in 2015!

Of course I'd love more but I know it wouldn't make me happier!

It all depends on how the average is calculated, but average top end bankers saleries are around £105,000 that puts 11 people on a 20,000 for every 1 banker...

note all figures are randomly rounded to something I can work out without taking my socks off...

Same here, currently at university and earning fuck all, rather than corporate whoring it working in IT in the banking sector (I'm much happier now, even though my salary when I get a job relating to my degree will be much less than the average salary...probably)

I think it depends on where you live. I live in London and earn a little bit above that, but I have no chance in owning our own property as the average here is around £400.000. You could live further north and have a much better lifestyle on that average earning.

Way above now but I've done two apprenticeships to get there and it's not the most stable industry as I've been made redundant 3 times in the last 6 years by teams going bankrupt so I've lost a lot of money too....But to be fair i earnt way, way below average for many years, done some crap jobs and now have a great one, job satisfaction is definitely the most important thing for me, the fact I get paid well for it is just a bonus.

I've been skint, really skint and I've earned six figures, it doesn't make a difference to your happiness as long as you have enough to cover the essentials.

I'd say the one thing that money does give you if the freedom to choose things that might not be otherwise available to you. For me, it's given me the choice to enable me to move to a decent area so my kids can go to better schools and grow up somewhere safe...and after growing up somewhere unsafe and going to horrendous schools i knows it's definitely not something I want to pass down to my kids as a fun life experience to be replicated. It was shit!
