The other thread "inspired" me ...

What do people think of other people's sometimes strange sounding beliefs and superstitions?

I have my _iews on some things and I would not be afraid to discuss them - however I would never mock anybody for holding true some things that I consider untrue.

How do you respond when somebody tells you soemthing you consider quite outrageous? Do you tell them, do you mock them, do you argue with them or do you simply respect them quietly?

I might make a comment explaining my opinion or _iewpoint, id hate to come across pushy though. I respect peoples _iews and that we are all different.

tend to discuss it with them.....probe a bit deeper into what they believe and testing their beliefs......might learn someting new....might not....but if they are genuinely held then will respect them for having the beliefs even if I don't agree with them

I would never mock anyone for their beliefs, just because I don't believe the same as someone else doesn't mean I can't respect what they believe. I've got a friend who is a practicing Muslim and am always asking why she believes what she does and why she does certain things, I find it interesting,even though I don't hold the same beliefs. X

Depends whether they are trying to shove their beliefs down my throat or not and there way is the only way.

If im sitting having a proper discussion with someone then im really really interested.

My beliefs are just that mine. Personal to me and i wouldnt try and tell anyone mine are better than anyone elses

I can understand that to a degree, although dont you think that that makes a healthy discussion that potentially at some point promotes tolerance in opposing _iew holders?

No, I don't actually. The Crusades proved that extremism in religious belief systems will always resort to violence at some point and not much has changed in 800 years. Perversely, they're still fighting over the same bloody city!

I think it's possible to have dialogue between the faiths but I don't believe any of them will ever give ground to another.

Call me an idealist, and I agree that it won;t happen overnight if ever. But what is the alternative? Both sides diggin in forever? I really believe that only through talking and above all listening will there ever be an imrpovement in many conflicts. And the listening skills can be practised..from a young age? In fact I feel we (adults) havea responsibility to model and promote listening... and no, I am not a tree hugger

Everyday in our lives good and bad things happen. But our natural instint is to remember the negative over the positive.

Example, you where a new dress, three people say they dont like it and 10 do. Its the three that dont like it that you remember. You only need to be told a negative thing about yourself once and it sticks with you ie someone saying you have a big nose, but it can take up to 100 times for someone to say something positive for you to believe them.

Bad things tend to bring out a stronger emotion. If something really bad happens to me, i try and find a positive in it, once i can see a positive i can close it and move on.

The wonders of CBT hey lol

In my _iew, anyone can believe in everything and anything so long as we're all nice to each other. Kind of a buddhist approach i know...

But its when others use their belief for hatred or outsiding others that i dislike it. A mate of mine is a heavy christian and we once had a discussion about evolution... Didnt speak for a while after that!

The Church has moved considerably over the past 100 years in so much that it will now acknowledge Darwin's theory of evolution, when at the time he wrote it he received huge scorn from some quarters and was even labelled a heretic by some.

Project forward 500 years and it's not that difficult to see how religion as we know it today will not exist. I'm sure there will be some sort of faith system but I also believe mankind will have eliminated major global conflict, and with that, religious conflict will not exist either.

Science has it's role to play in this so that the Church can reform in the face of undisputable evidence of evolution yet save face with it's followers. It's all about being comfortable with one's beliefs even if scientific evidence offers a far more plausible reality. Coincide those two things and we may well see peace for all mankind at some point in Earth's future.

An ex boss of mine who happened to be female was an engineer during the day, fully conversant in electronics but essentially a software engineer also having various scientific degrees under her belt. She is also a fully active catholic.

I had often wondered about folks who believe in science and religion because I cannot see how the two can mix. If you were to discus anything other than religion with my ex-boss you would get and very grounded, factual, logical discussion. And so one day I asked about her religious belief's... well I was quite shocked to be honest, all logic went out of the window, her reaction was more like asking a teenager about her most favourite pop star! I think if I had a 'fanny dampness meter' to hand it would have been off the scale!!!

Einstein, Pauli, and Shrodinger all came to believe in something, Einstein called it..the Ol Man...contempary science is littered with examples of scientists who believe in something subjective..always been the case..

I can totally agree. Just because a bunch of scientists say they have proof of evolution doesnt make it define fact. Nor does a bunch of diety followers with their proof make it so. The reality could be a combination of both elements.

I was more upset of the fact that he summed up both theories as'The RIDICULOUS theory of evolution and the FACT of religion'!!

i do respect others beliefs and would never mock anyone

how ever i do get an urge to speak up against these bloody suckers who take money off grieving people desparate to believe anything to get in contactwith their dead loved ones again

it just gets my goat up that they are willing to exploite people in their biggest hour of need

oh and spiritual healers, that american one who took $1000 off the 13 year old girl to make her walk again and then told her, after he failed to make her walk, no suprise there then!!! the reason she wasnt cured after he did his crap was because she was a sinner and god didnt want to heel her needs locking up, they do ore damange than good

I would never mock the people who go to see them, because they are at their wits end but thats what these people prey on

I had an unforgettable dream in my late teens. Twas a prism, with many faces in many places, many beliefs and many different lives. It gave me the feeling that all was part of one experience. Very calming to this day.

I think we have every right to judge others.

if someone has genuinely stupid, ignorant, or downright nasty beleifs, I see nothing wrong in calling them on their bullshit and NOT tolerating it
