You're making a very broad assumption there based on the premise that poor spelling is a product of poor education. It might be a result of poor typing skills and lack of attention. Some might argue your apparent lack of consideration of other causes might in itself be an indication of low intelligence. It can act as a filter, so look on it as a positive......

This how bad it has got.

I once interviewed a so called graduate who had a 'degree' despite having to take no final exams. His 6-month 3rd year project amounted to two sides of A4 filled with Latin placeholder text.

We can kid ourselves that this is OK, but it isn't. People like this are literally unemployable.

I can only add this, so we live in the same street as our primary school, our deputy head is also our daughters teacher, recently they had a task where they had to write the address at which they lived.

Now our street can be spelt in two different ways, the teacher has taught at the school for around ten years, my daughter spelt her address in the way it is spelt, the teacher told her she had spelt the name of the street wrong!!

She replied that she hadn't and that it wasn't spelt the same way as the place name in which it is similar too!!

The teacher then proceeds to send our daughter to the the head teacher to check the spelling and come back with evidence, e.g a letter addressed to the school!!

She did this, and much to the teachers embarassment, our daughter was correct!!!

I can accept that it's easy to confuse the two but ten years at the same school, driving down the same road with the same street sign, really!!!

It's very worrying, luckily we have a clever little monkey, and she is flying through school, so no harm done really Mrs blue eyes

This is the heart of the problem. The bright ones, and the ones with parents who care, can survive the State system and prosper.

The less bright ones and the more disadvantaged ones are the kids who are damaged the most by our terrible teachers.

This increases the inequality in society, which is precisely the opposite of what a good education system is designed to do.

Are there problems in some schools with educational standards - yes

Will this lead to accountants who can't add up - no. The qualifications needed to be one would still be the same - you'd just end up with a shortage of accountants .

My problem is that you have picked up on a spelling mistake and assumed many things . I know quite a few people who while they cannot spell are highly intelligent in other areas . And whether you think it's an excuse or not - there are people who struggle with dyslexia . My point is there isn't one simple answer.

. I totally agree, I often have this conversation with our eldest, he is doing fantastically well, we are extremely proud and have and always will support him all the way

Yet he will often come home after an assesment and say' the teacher hadn't covered all the topics again' only because he'd revised from other sources had he done well, I reply with an eagerness to complain to the school, he will ask 'why' because he's doing well in spite of that teacher, my reply is always the same' it's not right to sit by and allow other children in his class to suffer and not do so well, because they don't all have the support at home or are not all perhaps naturally clever' .

Having said that, we have some amazing teachers, I imagine it's the same with all walks of life, good and bad everywhere Mrs blue eyes

I wish you were right but you're not. Even if you were, this would still be worrying. A shortage of professionals is not something to be sanguine about.

In my line of work I routinely deal with young lawyers who don't understand the meaning of some of the words they write, thus causing critical confusion in correspondence.

In airline pilot training professional standards are dropping like a stone, largely because today's generation lack basic knowledge and basic skills.

Think about that next time you board an aircraft.

I think it's more a case that fab isn't the place to pull people up on their spelling. In the workplace or schools then it's absolutely correct that people do so but on here it just seems petty and a little nasty.
