There and to the left a bit

Don't think there can be any "best year" for every classic and much loved hit there's always some dross...to use 1980 as an example, just pulled up the top 50 selling singles for the year and you have the likes of Geno (Dexys), Going Underground (The Jam), Atomic (Blondie), Embarassment (Madness) and Too Much Too Young (The Specials)

On the flip side you have There's No-One Quite Like Grandma, Dance Yourself Dizzy (Liquid Gold), I'm In The Mood For Dancing (The Nolans) amd I Cpuld Be So Good For You (Dennis Waterman)

if you are on spotify there is a whole list of tracks there were made in that year... and it is truely impressive......

Think you could make the same case for most years though, just take a look at the short list of songs from 1980 I posted above, all of which could rightfully be considered classics, and that was compiled without even trying too hard. Some great songs from 71 you've posted although personally can't stand Stairway To Heaven or Maggie May, and a bit meh about Your Song too.

From 1971 you also have:

Knock Three Times - Dawn (4th best selling single of the year)

Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep - Middle Of The Road (3rd best selling single of the year)

The Pushbike Song - The Mixtures

Grandad - Clive Dunn

Ernie The Fastest Milkman In The West - Benny Hill

Watched it as well.... love the 80s but 1980 was a terrible year for music judging by that episode , Dennis waterman , bad manners , the vapors..

As a heavy rock fan I think 1980 was the best. AC/DC - Back in Black, Whitesnake - Ready an' Willing, Motorhead - Ace of Spades, Judas Priest - British Steel, Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell, Gillan - Glory Road, Ozzy - Blizzard of Ozz and many more.
