How would you describe your style?

Inspired by a conversation i have just had. Hipster chic? Neo-retro pastiche? Baroque? 80s black and chrome?

And what is your favourite pointless knick-knack?

I am going with eclectic. My favourite pointless 'thing,' is a small pewter duck ornament that opens up. There's a piece of amber coloured glass i found on a Welsh beach last summer inside.

I'd describe my style as alternative or metal, but pretty casual. I'm usually in a band t-shirt and skinny jeans.

I don't think that the things you enjoy having around you or wearing make you pretentious necessarily nor was I suggesting that i actively cultivate a style to impress anyone.

homeless allotment tennant style.

99% of the time i'm in mucky jeans and t shirt, any coat that's close to hand i don't care how it looks and boots, always the same boots, normally dirty from stomping round some field or whatever. i often smell of ferrets (which at this time of the year is frankly foul) and will have some dog hair on me somewhere normally. mucky fingernails and scratched hands to top it off

my favourite two things (i can't choose between them) are a little predator statue made of scrap metal and a little clay model of the wickerman they used to build every year at the wickerman festival, that was given to me by the late jamie gilroy, founder of the wickerman festival. they both stand about a foot high and i've had them as a very miss matched pair for years now

As for a knick knack, that'll be a prehistoric shark tooth I was given by a good friend many years ago. It is now sealed in a polycarbonate, fitted to my dive bcd and goes on every dive with me.

A stone coloured black with felt tip pen.

When i was 16 i joined the army and everyone had to get a small stone.

And carry it every where.to teach us not to lose it

till we got our ID cards which was big trouble if lost.

Am 48 and still have the stone.

Everyone's got a style whether they identify with it personally or not, its usually obvious to other people. Even if its as simple as scruffy or smart.

You used the word pretentious, implying that anyone who consciously dresses or decorates their home in a particular way is attempting to impress others, I don't think thats so.

I didn't take it as such

Some people favour style over substance and work to achieve a certain look. That's not what i was getting at.

I don't know what my style is really. My clothes have to be comfy because of sensory stuff, so flat shoes/dm's/canvas trainers with skater skirts/dresses skinny jeans and skinny t-shirts. I'm not very glamorous or fashion conscious at all. My kids school friends apparently think I dress like a (scruffy) teenager.

Favourite item, a beech wood branch with an old man's face carved into it, or my old map, 1860's I think, of where I live.

My style isn't really a style or at least I don't think it through conciously; it's just comfy unless I am really making an effort and then it's a bit retro (mainly because that too is comfy). As for nicknacks it's more about the memories than the aesthetic so I have a few but I don't tend to buy them.

I like baggy jeans, I get my t-shirts from SharkRobot and I have more hawaiian shirts than any sensible person should ever own.

Since the monsters the house has become a little more sensible but I'd still describe it as odd. The front room especially contains just shy of a thousand books and is painted in black, white and red.

Not sure about favourite possession. Possibly my Discworld statue?

At work it's pencil skirts, blouses and heels. Very office-y.

At home it's relaxed, jeans and t-shirts or pretty dresses. I'm more 'girl next door' than anything.

My favorite knock knack is a silly little glass bird I got free at a car boot. Its very round and simplistic, but VERY tactile. Its cold and hard but smooth and fits in my hand nicely. I don't know why, but I play with it constantly, especially if I'm upset or deep in thought.

As for my house it's modern, with a few sentimental pieces, my favourite being a canvas off my kids of a pic of us on my first birthday as a single mom x
