Have any women kept their coil in purely to see them through the menapause mines due to be changed or taken out completly but ive been reading articles that if you had your last one fitted over the age of 45 you can keep it in indefinetlt.

My apoointment is may but wondered if anyone had experience

I'm 45 and my mirena coil is due to be changed next year after 5 years. I assumed it would be in 5 years again and then see where I am in terms of menopause etc by then. Apparently the amount of hormone is so small you'll still get the normal menopause symptoms.

That probably doesn't help much in relation to your question though.

If you want to avoid symptoms find out more about bio-identical hormones most women who've been on contraceptives need extra progesterone (cream) for extra estrogen evolve/estradot.

That is really strange as the coil was suggested due to being pre menopausal

I've just had one fitted (nearly 40) and been told that I can have it changed it in 5 years and that will take me through to my menopause.

I kept my Mirena in until I was about 58. My gp said it was fine to do so and it didn't cause me any problems. If you need topical estrogen for any length of time they sometimes give you a mirena to protect your uterus.

I had one fitted 3 years ago to help with heavy periods. I was told that because I don't need it for contraception purposes it could just stay in there.

I did think that too, but it was one of the female Drs at my surgery who said it as I had wondered if the Mirena stopped symptoms. I think I'll ask again some time.
