Or was Fred a recycled victorian of our time, i met him twice and he captivated me both times with his anecdotes on general life. A positive thinking guy with a great laid back and easy going attitude both within business his proffesion and life in general.

Do you have any recollections of this great guy.

Agree with previous poster, never met but fantastic programmes he brought everything he talked about to life and could even show you how things were done/made.

Can't imagine he's revered too much on here though.

I have his autograph on a pic he personally gave me in 1997 at hollowell steam fair northampton where he attended with his steam traction engine.

A very interesting guy.

I met him as a child and had a little trip in the steam engine... very down to earth and no fakeness with him. I come from Bolton and see his statue very often...

Leeds

He was a product of television manipulation.

When he 1st appeared on television at the end of the 1970s, he was a typical working class man from Lancashire, carrying out a tough job as a steeplejack, albeit with some personality and character.

By the early 2000's, when he died, he had turned into some Victorian caricature or pastiche. That is what the the television companies and the viewers wanted to see - a Victorian character actor. That is what sold programmes and videos.

Not sure his track record with the local planners, neighbours or wives was that great!
