Cecil Balmond star to mark Scotland-England border

A giant star has been selected as the winning design for a landmark sculpture on the Scotland-England border.

Cecil Balmond's Star of Caledonia was chosen by the judges for the Border Crossing project at Gretna.

Panelist and Creative Scotland chief executive Andrew Dixon said the design was "rooted in Scotland's scientific contribution to the world".

The idea will now be developed throughout the summer before a planning application is submitted.

£3,000,000 price tag and not a penny in place to pay for it.

That's the last thing Scotland needs right now - if ever.

As a Scot myself, wouldn't it be more cost effective to construct a machine gun tower instead to keep the English out??

A wall is more likely to be used to keep the marading Scots in.

My family is still banned from Blanchland after several hundred years.

You clearly don't understand Mr Salmond's vanity.

Cheadle

Well let's hope they build it better than Manchesters "B" of the bang which promptly started to fall apart after a few windy nights, xxx

Sounds terrible.

No doubt someone will say "Ah but it comes from our special reserve fund of daft art projects at vast cost so it's not harming t'taxpayer" but..

it makes me sick when you see community services being shut down because of the cuts and yet there always seems to be a few bob knocking about for a white elephant like this.

There is no "special reserve fund of daft art projects".

There WAS such a fund but it's all been used trying to make people learn Gaelic. Gaelic, BTW, will become obligatory in an independent Scotland.

"Any comments on the Angel of the North?"

I love the Angel of the North and feel that reflects the North East entirely! I love to see him as I drive through that part of the A1 on my way northern bound.

Driving home to Scotland, up the M6/M74 I also enjoy the St Andrews flag, which represents all that is Scottish to a Scot and a welcome to Scotland to all nationalities, I feel I'm on my own soil again!

That object that they have designed says nothing Scottish to me at all and the price tag is ridiculous, especially in the current economic climate!

I thought it was quite a nice design actually. What is this life if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare (in me bestest Scottyish accent)

You wouldn't be able to get from Gateshead to Newcastle, and I'd fight you to the death to keep the Lit & Phil on our side of the wall..

"Any comments on the Angel of the North?"

It is fabulous and more importantly it worked! Newcastle/gateshead is now an accepted designation rather than a "you what?" The sage, the baltic are world class. They would not have been attempted without the pride and wow factor the angel engendered.

However whilst the many attempts to copy the angel have looked at the reports into the economic benefits, they seem to fall down artistically. The angel works as a piece of art, independent of anything else.Just like Gormleys wonderful figures on the beach in Southport.i have yet to see another of these projects that does. The very worst being kents white horse.
