The police have a handy way of finding out.

But if you're asking then I'd suggest stepping away from the car...

I don't think you can tell. The problem with alcohol is it removes inhibitions so you're judgment is impaired, so once you've had one drink you're in no position to decide if you're fit to drive. Which is kind of the point in having limits.

It differ between people, I don't drink so 1 glass of wine would send me over the limit as my body wouldn't cope with it.

That's why it's a % not a set figure I assume.

Google

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the legal alcohol limit for drivers is: 80 milligrams of alcohol for every 100 millilitres of blood in your body. 35 micrograms of alcohol for every 100 millilitres of breath. 107 milligrams of alcohol for every 100 millilitres of urine.

At Christmas we went to a dinner dance, I had one small glass of wine with dinner between 7:30 & 8:30. We left at midnight and I drove home. I'm happy with that but wouldn't drink in a pub then drive.

It takes the average person approx one hour to dispose of one unit of alcohol from their system.

So you're basic bottle of bud which is about 1.5 units will take an hour and a half to disappear from your system.

I'd personally never get behind a wheel if I had, had even a shandy.

I short. If youve had even one drink, play it safe dont drive. Get a taxi or lift and get your car in the morning.

I don't think it's something to try and work out what it means. Everyone is different and it depends on health, what you've eaten, metabolism etc......so, as everyone else has said.....don't drink any alcohol whatsoever before getting behind the wheel of your car

as a non-driver, I find it completely baffling why there is still a limit nowadays. Drinks, wine particularly, is served in much larger glasses and is much stronger than 20 years ago..and the effects are so variable, and affected by so many things..must be impossible to judge when you've had too much to drive...

I've been really bad for this in the past but it really is not worth the trouble nor someone's death on your hands (which is what an ex friend of mine has to live with for the rest of his life now). I either have two tipples and then shitloads of water. If I travel far I drink 1 or nothing.

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

A good few years ago, I went to a Xmas party. It was held at a pub that I could, if push came to shove, drive down farm tracks and very quiet country roads to get back home. The normal route home was, as always, devoid of any traffic at that time of night.

I reckon I must have consumed about 1/3rd bottle of wine.

150 yards away from home and after an incident-free journey home I saw a "big stick" in the road and decided I musn`t drive over it or it could damage a tyre (on a Range Rover) so I moved to straddle the stick, putting two wheels on the wet and slippery grass verge. I felt a "small twitch" as the vehicle slid but got home.

The next morning I drove to work over the same route. The "big stick" was something a chiouha(sp?) wouldn`t have had a problem with bit the "small twitch" was a skid mark 50 yards long and inches away from a deep water filled ditch that would have swallowed my Range Rover without a problem!

I don't drink any alcohol when I'm driving. I hardly ever drink anyway so it's not worth the risk and I think it must impair your driving to some degree, even just drinking a small amount.

You wouldn't know, and the thing about taking am hour for your body to process a unit is just an average. There are so many variables that affect the rate, don't rely on that. We went to a wedding recently and I had a small glass of champagne with the toasts at lunchtime knowing I wouldn't be driving until late and that was it. It's not worth the risk.

That's ok....your body loses 1 unit of alcohol every hour.

The answer to the ops question is there is no definite answer as it's all down to body size and the speed you drink at.

Never drink and drive. Not even a half. My car was written off after someone rear ended me on an A road and I was breathalised but found to have 0 alcohol in my system.

Even in that instance where I could not have avoided the incident if I'd had any trace in my system some doubt on my case/blame would have been thrown my way.

For example, the ABV of beer typically varies from 3.5% to 5.5%.

A typical "medium" glass of wine with 175 ml at 12% ABV has 2.1 units.

And spirits, although typically 35–40% ABV, have single measures of 25 ml or 35 ml (so 1 or 1.4 units) depending on location

And that's just units and not levels of intoxication

one drink is to much!

my dad was killed by a d*unk driver, my mum will never walk properly again without a walking stick.

my son has been denied his chance to get to know his granddad.

I know this is somewhat a very blunt post but this is the direct result of someone having "a drink or two"

the laws in this country are a joke considering you drink and drive you are incharge of half a tonne of mechanics and metal and aware of the implications of drink driving.... should be instant attempted manslaughter at best because you hit another car you could potentially kill the person in it..

and then its left to someone like me to pick up the broken bits, take them to hospital and hope that its not to late

It takes approximately 1 unit of alcohol an hour to get into your bloodstream and an hour to pass through. So a pint of beer is around 1.6 units. Thats 2 hours in total. You have 6 or 7 pints. Finish at 11 at night. You are still well over in the morning. Plus we have a lousy sleep when d*unk. Just adds to the risk, especially in the morning.

"Drink drive limit is 1 unit, that is half a pint of average strength lager"

Sorry Rachel I don't that's quite accurate. It's all reference to the proportion of alcohol in relation to a measurement of either breath( classic breath test) or in relation to blood given.

The fact of the matter is everyone's ability to process alcohol is different, based on what you've eaten, body mass etc.

Using units as a guide is risky. Whilst most of us can drink one unit quite safely, surely it's better to abstain and be 100% safe, not only to preserve your licence but more importantly others lives.

Up here it's essentially nothing. Limit is set so low. I guess to eliminate medicines etc.

Does beg the question why pubs/ restaurants etc don't serve alcohol free products? (Many not all)

The trade complained it was damaging their business yet they never changed products to adjust. Just juice or juice on the menu, which are astronomically priced.

Some decent alcohol free beers out there these days. Come a long way since Kaliber in the 80s.

Alcohol affects us all differently, there are those who will drink 5 pints and get behind the wheel cause they think they're totally fine to drive, if I'm drinking, no matter how small amount, I won't drive, even if it's been a few hours since the last drink, I'd never take the risk.
