Thread closed, got too big

Just wondering how quick it can take to get a thread closed due to size, and is it because people just add comments to a previous post, so the posts get bigger and bigger, and hence that's how a thread gets too big? Or is it just the volume of replies, so a numerical limit?

175 is the 'stop' but there are ways to continue posting beyond that hence why some get to 180+ and even more ...

Apparently 100 posts in a single thread might be a threshold - according to a certain wise man - it can lead to being blocked from posting on the forum

Central

More posts = increased costs to fab and less money left for site improvement
