If you are burning up fat as well as toning up how many calories is a good number to aim for in an hour.

I know walking burns up 400 calories an hour(for me) so im thinking that my swimming for an hour would burn up about the same. I burnt of 700 calories in the gym this morning plus the hour swimming before. So thats 1100 calories plus the 15 minutes walk there and back which i would say is about another 150.

So 1250 in total.

Is this good should i be aiming to burn more or is this sufficient.

I tried to do my full programme today and it nearly killed me cause ive got a bad rib still so couldnt lift the weight had to do lower weights

That's more than enough for a day. You can over do it if you are not careful as your muscles need a little relax time. 4 or 5 times a week is well ample for most things but you can do more swimming as it puts less stress on the joints. The main thing though is to enjoy it and it sounds like you are

Three times a week im doing it, mondays, wednesdays and fridays, to give my body arest. 46 years with no exercise i dont want to go silly. Just couldnt find anything online that tells you the ideal to be burning of in a session lol.

I am enjoying it well i enjoy it when i finish, i was nearly crying this morning lol. But i know it will get easier

It does get easier the more you do and you will get a buzz from doing it. As a woman you will use 2-3k cals a day. If you burn an extra 900 its about right although i have herd different from different sources. The best advice i was given is to do what exercise i feel comfortable with and then 10% extra. Ask your doctor though, they can give good advice tailored for you.

Thanks katie, i have a exercise plan for my "needs" done at the gym. Although my weight loss is going really well would be lovely to loose an extra lb a week

I would try not to do too much too soon, fat burning should be gentle to brisk exercise which allows the body to burn the fat.... if you go at it too hard then the body will use the muscle as its source of energy, that is why you get "skinny fat people" they have very little muscle mass but they still have the stomach.... a heart rate monitor would be ideal, work within your target zone and that burns the fat, it will seem that you are not doing much, but it works, you do not need to be dripping in sweat and completely knackered to lose the weight.

sounds like you are pushing your self a little too much but if you are having rest days then you should be ok. Its important you don't damage muscles or ligaments when exercising so make sure you warm up before hand. As has been said swimming is probably the best exercise and it uses up lots of cals so if you are yo up anything do that. Also make sure you get plenty of sleep and eat foods with some carbs and protein and you will feel years younger.

Thankyou people, it does seem im generally doing the right stuff. I know i have to keep my muscle up and im building my muscles by doing half my programme weight and half cardio.

I eat lots of carbs and protein and little fat with lots of fruit. I also know to keep my food intake up as well so as not to starve the body and send the weight loss down. I also know that the more weight i loose the less calories i need and my metabolic rate will come down.

Blimey i am learning lol

you will find your ligaments and tendons strengthen. You might even end up slightly taller as you will stand more upright. Your breathing will also improve as you are using more oxygen. Exercise has a great natural high. Hope you are enjoying working out.

I found that my local gym was happy to work my workout around my injury... Its been great and I have steadily been losing fat.. and toning up, but mostly just getting fitter...

I only do my full circuit 3 times a week.. and cardio the other two days and rest ( if you can call it rest with 4 kids) over the weekend.. but we do go walking, cycling etc..

I have also thrown in two zumba classes a week too.. some weeks I lose 3-4lb others its only a 1lb.. but in a year have only had one week where I didnt loose anything and one where i put on 1/2lb.

good luck and sounds like you have all the right things in place.

Start with yer doctor..especially if yer new to rigorous exercise..most peeps over compensate their calorie intake after a good workout, eat lots of fruit..yer body loves it fer all sorts of reasons..

Mix and match yer exercises...you`ll not get bored..should be something you enjoy, and carry on doing long term

I always suggest skipping to peeps...most raise their eyebrows...but tis a high intensity aerobic exercise..hence boxers love it...nd easy enough to pop in yer handbag or suitcase...have fun and don`t overtrain..you`ll burn out tehe

oh measure yourself.. there are weeks that I only lost a very little amount of weight, but my inch loss showed I had lost inches.

I measure myself every 4 weeks.

Im half way to goal...well a bit further, lost 5 stone, have 4 more to go.

Take each day as it comes..

Ive also lost just over 5stone now. Up till last month none of the weight had come of my boobs, i was a 44dd. My mum just measured me and we reckon im a 40c. They really seem to have shrunk before my eyes this last month.

I walk to work and back 4 days possibly out of 5; 3.77 miles there and the same back, you have said that your walking burns 400 calories, why? Is there a difference in calorific burn depending on your weight, speed?

I am also interested in what foods I should be eating, given that I work a fairly sedentary day job but shifts in a pub for around 15-20 pw and on my feet the whole time. I am therefore using more energy but not eating properly. It is also more energy compared to my 20's when I did nothing at all, not even work

Think you are doing brilliantly, so a big hug for doing so well

Im not an expert yet but im learning. The bigger you are the more calories you use up because you have more weight to carry. You have to eat properly otherwise you will loose muscle which you need. Your body needs carbs and protein but little fat. It sounds as though you do lots of exercise through walking but you need to eat better so that the exercise is doing you good.

Signed not quite an expert yet diamondsmiles lol

Sounds like you are doing pretty well to me, definitely makes sense. My problem is that I am and never have been brilliant at cooking so probably live on food that isn't good for me alongside a daily bar of chocolate, occasionally missing meals but I am learning slowly. At least I know now following a visit to the doctors, my sudden weight loss isn't down to being ill, its the sudden and increase in 'exercise' I do

Sounds like you are doing the right things, but a word of caution...

Jayne hit the gym hard a couple of months ago, and after a few days her energy levels started to climb, and so did her already feisty libido lol!!

Great news for a while..... until her immune system crashed due to a minor viral infection. When working out, be aware that your body will take time to recobver. At the start I would recommend only working out every other day, with at least 2 whole days rest per week.

Another point to note, muscle weighs 4 times that of fat per cubic cm, so dont hit the weights too hard!! Its very disheartening to lose (fatty) inches but gain weight lol!

Bananas though fattening are very good for women as they contain potassium. Another is peanuts, also fattening but full of protein.

Am doing the same and eating a whole lot more fruit

Avoid bad carbs I would say ie bread in particular, high protein diet is the way fwd and you're likely to feel full quickly, and hopefully consume fewer calories in the long run.

Good luck

Unbelievable as it may sound, I go to the gym twice a week and zumba once a week. When at the gym I burn about 400 calories on the cardio machines and then I do weights, so im doing half and half. I find that I have never lost weight whilst going to a gym, but my body shape changes a lot

muscle mass will be increasing so you will not actually lose weight, you will lose fat but it will be replaced by muscle.

interval work is great. Bloody hard work but you notice the difference if you stick at it. Swimming is great too, gives good definition to the bod.

Spot on - Don't focus too much on burning calories - the displays on CV kit are only a rough guide anyway. If you want to go serious try to do 20 minutes of CV about 3 times a week or more, and aim for the target heart rate for your age.

Doing anything is great, keepit up mate
