Incorrectly fitted bras.......

Jump to newest

Ok ladies, do you have a bug bare? I have, one that if just one lady goes and gets herself fitted into a correctly fitted bra then I've achieved something today. Having been around the site now for approximately 5 months. I see, on a daily basis you ladies in bras that are ill fitting. As a full trained bra fitter for over 10 years I appreciate and promote breast health and is paramount. A bra that doesn't fit you correctly causes all sorts of issues. This can be from backache for us larger breasted ladies to being attributed to damaged breast tissue that could have the potential to turn cancerous. Please please please look at yourself in the mirror.

1. No wires should be touching breast tissue..

2. No double cupping or overhang in the cup.

3. The centre of the bra should be sat back against the chest wall.

4. The back band should sit horizontal, fastened on the middle hook and eye and NOT riding up at the back.

5. Straps should take the weight of the breast and lift. Not too tight. Pop your finger under the strap on top of the shoulder, you should be able to feel tension but leave it there comfortably.

6. Wires should sit outside the breast tissue, not too high into the armpit and cup the breast around the chest wall.

I'm not here to promote any particular high street fitting service but merely to point you in the direction of checking your bra size is correct. Our breast health is as crucial as having our regular smear test and using condoms when "swinging"...........

That's easier said than done though isn't it to actually find one that fit's well,I dread bra hunting even when I have a proper fitting. I wouldn't mind if I had huge boob's,but I don't.

I appreciate that sometimes it's very frustrating finding the right fitting bra..... I'm talking about the bra that we wear most of the time on a daily basis. It's well worth that time investment. There will be a brand or high street brand that suits your body shape. I just feel so passionately..... the number of women I have come across with the aftermath of breast cancer, I I can help just one more lady then this post will be worth it xx

Debenhams do a free bra fitting service..

last time I went there I was under the illusion that I was a 36 d as that's what I'd always been, but after being measu_ed it turned out I was a 34e, which was great as it was a great excuse to go shopping

For years I hadn't been measu_ed.i was wearing 42d.only wore underwrite to go out..last October I had a breast scare..i went to see consultant..thankfully was ok.but he did recommend a decent bra..so I immediately went and got measu_ed..i was actually measuring 42f.all my flabbyness that hung over the bra has gone.and I now have a waist..i would recommend any one esp with larger bust to get measu_ed.

Love this thread! I was informed by the lady in the Markies fitting room that I'm a 34C. She could tell just by looking at me that I was wearing the wrong size. I'd never bought a 34C in my life before. Now I do and it's so much better.

My friend is a Markies bra fitter, she always has her trusty tape measure and gets the girls sorted!

Its so much more comfortable to have a good fitted bra though, its mad tothink how many are persevering with bits sticking in where they shouldn't!

All of my bras are ill fitting. I shop at bravissimo and even they struggle to find one that actually fits properly. I don't go in looking for something nice or pretty, i just want one that fits properly. I usually end up with one that is "the best we can do but not quite right".

I have tried pretty much every brand available but nothing is just the right fit for me

I'm an in between chest size at 33 inches with ample bust.

I'm currently in a 34 j cup. A tiny bit too big around the back and wires cone under my arm pits.

A 32 is a little too tight.

Any suggestions?

I wouldn't dream of personal over the net advise. Other than shop around. Different retailers use various suppliers. There is something out there. Good luck. At least you're breast aware which is great xx

Please be careful giving advise for various stores. All depts stores and brands measure differently for their own supplied bras. This industry needs standardising. This is one of the reasons women are confused and wear incorrect sizing. The advice I've given at the start of the thread is how a bra should fit from any retailer.

I went for a bra fitting again recently as in the past few years I've lost 10st, been pregnant, breastfed etc. I also gone from a size 14 to a size 10/12 in the last 6 months so was convinced I needed new bras. Apparently I'm still a 34dd, can't see it myself but the women in VS and Bravissimo both seemed convinced. I'm just not sure I should still be a 34 back.

It comes off differently for different people. I started losing weight at a size 20 and a 40F. 5 stone down I am a 14 and a 36E. So I've gone down more in the ribcage than the cupsize. I also now know balconettes don't work for my changed boob shape. I still have a few but they are for temporary looking at, not everyday supportive wear.

"How often would you suggest we go?? "

Every six months is the average life span of a regularly worn bra so ideally you should be measu_ed as you make a purchase. Even a lady whose weight never fluctuates will over time change body shape with age. I can't recommend enough getting your daughters into this routine too. It's really not daunting and we endeavour to treat everyone with the upmost respect and empathy. Xx

But different makes seem to size differently.

As well as that, m and s sized me as a 36b, a week later rigby and peller sized me as a 34d. R and p told me to always try on a bra before buying to check fitting, as bras will fit differently due to the variety of makes, shapes, designs and the way your body changes.

I agree this is a great thread.

I finally convinced a friend who had been wearing a 36c to get measu_ed. I reckoned she was more 32D maybe a 34. Chuffed that I was right

Gaining and losing weight can have a huge impact on bra size. I was a 34b pre baby, then 34c. By my early 30s I had put on weight and was a 38c. I lost "weight" by exercising and am now a size 14 and a 34F . How does that happen?

In just the same way as any other part of your body changes shape with age, babies, weight gain and loss. You're just more aware of your boobies because you've had a starting point measurement. If we measu_ed our calfs, thighs, hips, buttocks they will all have measu_ed differently over these periods of time. Xx

Nita

In just the same way as any other part of your body changes shape with age, babies, weight gain and loss. You're just more aware of your boobies because you've had a starting point measurement. If we measu_ed our calfs, thighs, hips, buttocks they will all have measu_ed differently over these periods of time. Xx"

Very probably... It's just strange as I didn't expect to end up with this class size...

Nope... I have been trained how to correctly fit a bra ... Hence the awareness of changes and buying the correct size for my current shape.

Good on you when I was first fitter before being a bra fitter I was wearing a 34c now I wear a 30dd"

I think many women over estimate back size and then end up with the wrong cup size.

Err.. find me a 38M then? No shop in Britain stocks them and i have to wear a 40L instead as i can just about find one. But it does all the things bras are not neant to do. Slides up at the back, so tight I have to do up at the front and slide round, catches on my arms, pushes me into my armpits, difs in between them....

I'd go back to making my own if i had the time because, quite frankly, bra shopping is a nightmare, even online. The pantonising attitude of websites once you get over a E cup drives me up the wall.

"Ladies. Boob or bust! Seriously since i followed their measuring its been amazing. I went down in band and up in cup and no double boob, no arm pit boobs and my posture feels better. "

I would recommend BOB to everyone! Nightmare trying to convince women that it's right though as so many don't understand that band and cup size are relevant to each other and that "f" or "g" isn't a size. A 32F and a 36F are different sizes.

"Ok ladies, do you have a bug bare?

"

Isn't the band meant to take the majority of the weight not the straps?

It will work out that way for small cup sizes probably. But for a larger bust, even with a wide back band, the straps have to hold a fair bit of weight.

Getting fitting right matters even more for the larger bust, but I find getting a good fit much more difficult since I exceeded a DD.

I've been told no matter what size the band is still meant to take the majority of the support. That's why lower bands and larger cups are better. Most people who are something like a 40D would find that actually they'd fit better into a smaller size. I know of so many women who have gone from that size to fitting into a 36/38 with a higher cup size.

Google Boob or Bust and measure yourself using their calculator! You're definitely bigger than an A cup. Depending what shop you go to they will "plus 4" your size which leads to people wearing bigger bands than they need to.

I think it's probably because many are wearing the wrong size in the first place, because The correct band size may feel tight.

I have tried pretty much every brand available but nothing is just the right fit for me

Do they do a measuring service too?

If not I'd go to Debenhams or John Lewis, get them measu_ed and go back and get some bras that fit

Please be careful giving advise for various stores. All depts stores and brands measure differently for their own supplied bras. This industry needs standardising. This is one of the reasons women are confused and wear incorrect sizing. The advice I've given at the start of the thread is how a bra should fit from any retailer. "

Bras in different shops are different sizes, it's ridiculous. I always take a few into the changing rooms to try on.

I have only ever found one particular bra that ever fitted properly and that was from Rigby and Pellar, a second from ebay.

I daresay if I was willing to pay over 25 quid for one, I may find one that fits but I doubt it. They are a rip off and manufactures take the piss. M&S are the worst, none of them fit properly and they all assume all boobs are the same shape.

I recently found a balcony that came close to fitting but after a couple of washes it was crap. I know exactly what I'd do with my lottery win!

When I was younger I thought I was a 36C as that's what a high street store told me. It wasn't until I got my boobs measu_ed properly I realised the difference a well fitted bra made.

I need them measu_ed again as with age & weight loss they seem to have diminished...

Hi ladies ..... just to clarify a bra size is just that, a size. Don't get hung up on it. Use a measurement as a guide to get the correct fit using the guide I mentioned in the opening thread. A bra fitter now fits by sight not a tape. We are trained to fit visually. A measurement will only be taken if you don't know your guide size when you have an appointment. You are all right in saying that style, brand, store can differ but not greatly. Always visually fit yourself do not rely on a tape measure.

Large breasted women, it's usually better to fit slightly firmer on the underband and increase in cup. I.e. Measu_ed size 38 cup F .... as in my own size. However I usually fit myself in a 36 G.... this keeps the actual cup the same size but anchors the bra to help the straps support the breast. Hope this helps

I know quite a few women who have gone to high street shops and had a bra fitting, only to complain afterwards they are wearing the wrong bra.

Apart from your handy guide, how can the women get it right?

I currently wear a 38GG but recently lost a stone and a half. Its 4cm off my boobs. I am going to go in and get fitted in my usual store but hate it. They all look so ugly and no knickers to fit in the style i want.

Cant afford big prices but just want a nice bra.

I agree that the correct bra fit is essential xx

Take a friend and fit each other using the visual guide. The only bra that will not suit all breast shape is plunge, steer away from that style. The easiest fit for most breast shapes is the balcony. Full cup smooth is the best for smooth lines ( t shirts ) anyone else wanting further advise please inbox me. Happy shopping ladies..... xx

that is probably because they get their bra fitting done then go off to other shops to buy the bras..

bra sizes vary between shops just the same as jeans sizes or dress sizes..

What riles me is the lack of choice. There is literally 1 model of bra available in the uk that comes close to futting me and if i manage to lose weight, which i need to do, tgere will be none available.

40L althougb i should wear a 38M. I wear jane from simply be as its the only cotton bra in that size i can find in the uk.

I resent that if you are under a D cup you get offe_ed a choice of colours, of styles and fabrics. Us big of bosom just get offe_ed big bras. I don't want big bras. I want big cups. I also want options of strapless, cleavage enhancing and pretty bras.

I have tried pretty much every brand available but nothing is just the right fit for me "

Same i can get most of the list sorted except that the bit of the bra that should sit on the skin between the boobs never ever does it sticks out at the top of the wires between my boobs andi have even tried going up a cup size but that just makes the cups gape.

To get the wire to sit flat on the chest between the boobs you usually need a smaller back size. When you go down a size at the back you normally need to go up a cup size. I.e if you usually wear a 36e try a 34f.

I know it's not the same for us tv's obviously, and I'm sure I will get some feedback, I am also hoping that for a miracle that there are bra designers on here and that they would read this post.

Given that there are many many many tv's in the world and we obviously wear bras as well, which means that we are also customers and "target market" for bra manufacturers who spend just as much money if not more than women on our lingerie, but can manufacturers produce bra's in the 40-42 size range that have cup sizes in the smaller range as well, above a size 38 you cannot get a B cup anywhere and struggle to get a C cup, they are all D and above, I known real women's breasts are in proportion to their chest circumference so that's why cup sizes are likely to be D and above at the 40 to 42+ Size range and I also understand that real women will say bras are for real women so why would manufacturers cater for TVs at all, and we should just put up and shut up and make do with either a bra that it's too tight around the chest but has the right cup size we like to wear fur the appearance we want, or a size that doesn't cut in and end up very uncomfortable after a few hours but gives cup sizes that don't fit our breast forms or the appearance we are wanting to achieve.

I hope you real ladies appreciate and the context I write this post. Just give me a size 42 Bcup in every Range so I can have a bra that fits, I'm happy to pay the same price as real women pay for their bras just give me the size I want........

Ahh yes you would think that...for some reason I don't lose weight from the boobs. So if I lose overall then my boobs become comparatively bigger, the back size goes down but the cup suze goes up.

Nearest bra fitters to me would be 60 miles away I'm totally wearing the wrong size for years. we have m&s here but no measuring service and the biggest size they do here in store is a 40E I shop online for my bras and have to guess I'm wearing 44F at the moment but the underwire on some of them really cuts the hell out of me

Bras are designed to hold breast tissue not squidge. Unfortunately if this is where you ( as do many ) carry excess skin then there's nothing a bra can do. Sorry Xx

"Ok ladies, do you have a bug bare?

"

Since having radiotherapy my right breast has shrunk considerably. Now at least 2 sizes smaller than the left. E/f /small D what is your suggestion on a correct fitting bra in this instance. Would be good to know

Firstly I'm really sorry you hear you've had to undergo treatment of that nature and hope you're recovering well. All women are upto one cup size bigger and in all cases including yours we would always fit to the larger breast. Where difference is minimal often a padded bra ( non wi_ed ) if your treatment was for breast cancer would even out and keep shape. Where there's a significant difference and a prosthesis isn't requi_ed/unwanted then I'm afraid it would still be the same advise. To always fit to the larger breast. I'm only familiar with the high street solutions. There maybe something out there on the net that could offer a made to measure service but obviously would come at a cost. Xx
