Wonder how much she's been paid for that?

All they wanted was the money!

Absolutely shameful......

No.

I still believe that some people should never be parents.

I wouldn't have thought anything as I don't think she will be in it.

Out of morbid curiosity.

I wouldn't call her a mother though. Mothers don't allow their child to be abducted and hidden for money while lying to the whole country about it.

If it's her story, in her words then she'll get something for it!"

That was my first thoughts.....but it's just people talking about her.

So no its not as the title suggests.

Just read about it, not really the Mothers' story is it.

More dire investigative journalism

Well she hasnt has she? Doesnt matter how much time she does the psychological damage she did to her child will last a lifetime and that can never be repaid

On the whole I agree with that but what she done was a different kind of sick so it's understandable people are going to have strong feelings against her. It'll follow her to her dying day and so it should.

The law says differently. By all accounts she was/is quite a damaged person herself (abused). I just don't see the point in demonising her any further...

I get what you're saying but the law doesn't control people's emotions. Should she be left to get on with her life? Yeah. Will she be allowed to get on with her life? Probably not. That's what happens when you commit a crime as shocking as hers and nothings gonna change that.

she left her daughter with a paedophile!! Surely if she had been abused she would never let him anywhere near her daughter.. sorry but she is as bad as him in the scenario she created

You can see my point and I quite agree with your points too. But for some it isn't enough and for those people she will always be someone who wasn't treated harshly enough... In a court of law she has been judged.

You are incorrect. It was her partner Craig who was judged to be the paedophile as you put it. The uncle Karen Matthews's daughter was with was and has never been charged with any sexual offences against children...

She still left her daughter in his care and had him around her, who in their right mind does that!

She caused her daughter all that harm and the poor kid lost all her family as she cant even see her grandparents all because her mum wanted to cash in.

She should have served a hell of a lot longer sentence.

I am not defending her actions, Scarlett. What she did was wrong and unlawful and she was judged so by those better served to say than any of us after taking into consideration legal precedent, the full facts of the case, the harm to her daughter and Karen Matthews' own pyschological reports.

How long would you have given her?

Life! She ruined her daughters and familys life so thats what she should serve.

Have you actually seen how pitiful and leniant sentences are here in the UK, we need to have a tougher approach like america does and stop these cushy prisons, she's come out and still trying to make money selling stories etc. Lots of people go through worse than she ever did but they wont harm their children like she did

Those "tougher" American prisons really make that much difference? The statistics don't bear that out. The US has four times as many people in their prisons compared to us (and before anyone says it is a bigger country this is based on prison population per 100,000 citizens). Tougher prisons are not a deterrent, Scarlett. If that's your yardstick.

It was sad to watch..

The mom obviously has huge issues herself

And was very much attention seeking..

Taking into account her whole life I think justice was served.

Hoping Shannon lives a happy life now

My friends husband works in a maximum security prison in texas for some it is a huge deterrent. You realise her time served was sat in what would pass as a holiday home in america there wasnt any real fear just no way for her to abuse her daughter in there and now she is out I think it wont be long until she does something stupid again.

Any stats on the reoffending rate there compared to the UK, or a country with what you'd consider an even more lenient sentencing and prison system? For instance the Netherlands?

Scarlet... u talk about these jails in America being deterrents, I suggest you watch Louis Theroux program on pedophiles in America the place was like a retirement village for pedophiles and life was that good in it this place they didn't want out of it ...

I have never heard that one. As far as the program stated she is working as a volunteer in a charity shop now.

One of the things stated in the program from a so called expert is.....parents will always be very judgemental in cases like these.

I myself think it was discusting what she did.....but I think she was a very damaged person with a mental age of a teenager.

So in fairness I feel it is time to move on now and I hope this is the last of these programs about the case as it stirs up too many emotions and does nobody any good.

Recidivism rates in the UK and the US generally run at about 70-80% in any given period, whereas those soft Scandies and Benelux countries have a recidivism rate of between 30-50%

Probably not the answer most want to hear, but them's the facts.

Punitive populism doesn't work.

I am a lawyer. I used to do lots of criminal defence work and I can assure everyone that my clients hated going to prison and would be desperate for me to keep them put. Which would be strange if they were like holiday camps.

I also visited a lot of prisons and it would be difficult to describe more depressing soul destroying places.

I suspect that those who run the holiday camp line get their info about prison either from the tabloid Press or some bloke they met down the pub who knows a bloke whose brother went to prison and he was given an iPad and had regular visits from high class hoppers.

I've just finished a degree in in criminology where we spent some time in prisons, and if they're holiday camps, don't ever send me on holiday there!
