When to go to A&E

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

So yesterday the pain in my arm/pit/fingers was unbearable dispite having 2 zapain and 2 Ibrufin. I was a bit naughty and had the zapain half an hour early but at that point I didn't care. The pain subsided to just the point of origin which is my armpit. It's nerve pain related to my fibromyalgia. I fell asleep and this am my arm just feels heavy.

I conside_ed seriously about going to A&E but firstly it would of been impossible for me to drive plus I had that nagging feeling that I would of been waisting the hospitals time. Having worked in hospitals and with the emergency services I'm very aware of how hard they work.

I've tried to get a doc appointment but with no luck although I have been advised to send a letter into my doc and he will make sure I'm seen when I'm in need.

What I'm trying to ask is when is pain so bad that it's expectable to use A&E, baring in mind I know why I'm in pain and I know it's not life threatening but it was to the point I was sca_ed I would pass out.

Hope you lot are happy sausages today.

P.s I've ditched the fibro support groups as all they do is grumble. My fab friends are far more fun n always cheer me up.

you all PTU XXX

Have you tried ringing 111 and seeing if they will advise you?

They may be able to get you in at your docs as they carry more weight x

Call 111, they can get you into a GP very quickly if they feel its necessary. If you tell them the pain you are they should sort you out pretty quickly

Honestly if the pain is making you sick or unable to sleep or function id get it looked at, have they given you anything for the nerve pain? I have nerve damage and on Gabapentin to ease the pain and make it more manageable.

Do you have an out of hours GP at your hospital you can see other than A&E, I also find that if i ring my GP and ask to speak to the duty doctor they will then arrange an appointment same day or next x

I'd make a real fuss at the docs. Get them to review your pain meds.

I must admit that I think A&E would probably have been a waste of time, yours and theirs.

Both my children have had broken bones (one wrist other leg) and I made them wait until the next day before carting them off to A&E.

I didn't think either had broken anything but as they had restless nights and were in pain the next morning I took them! Maybe not the best judge

I'll ask about those thank you. I'm finding with the ama I'm having far less "dead" days but not sure they do anything for the pain. I guess I need some thing I can take as one off just when my arm pain hits me. As I take zapain daily for the usual aches n pains it doesn't touch the nerve pain. Unless I double up like I did last nite. That's not something I want to do on a regular basis. Xxx

Gabapentin made me a zombie at first but now im used to it its fine, just take an extra one at night to help me sleep!

Zapain are ok but just like a strong paracetamol to me, if you havent had tramadol dont, they can make you really sick :/ oxy is the only one that takes the pain away ive found!

Definitely have a medication review and explain what the pain is like, do you find when you have nerve pain it can be itchy and burning too? X

Had tram n I'd love to have it again cos that does work but it's been taken off the market in Wales cos of links to deaths. Yes zapain is just extra parras. Tbh i didn't want to take the next rung on the ladder with pain Meds but looks like I'm going to have too.

The pain I get originals in my arm pit and goes down to my fingers. It is a squeezing burning pain. Quite like I imagine a heart attack to feel like. I did used to think I was having a heart attack (I did last night) but as I've had the pain for years n I'm still here I know it's not my heart lol. Last night I wanted to take a knife n cut out the perceived point of pain in my armpit. Sometimes I want to cut my whole arm off but on an angle so I cut my shoulder off as well. Does that make sence? Also the pain leaves my arm feeling heavy and useless like I've had a stroke.

Not being dramatic just how it is. Xxx

Gabapentin did bugger all for me and I was on double standards dose. I've taken amitriptyline for years...good stuff when it works ??

I've had more arguments in a &email when I've dislocated joints and they won't believe I have because I'm not screaming in agony or haven't done anything major.i can pop a hip sneezing or turning over in bed. So I tend not to bother going x

Thank you xxx"

You want the Health in Wales website

There's a link on there for finding local services, and you can look under Betsi Cadwaladr UHB

Not here the patients all get triage at a&e before getting moved to walkin centre and I think even that has been closed ? So no wonder a&e always seems so busy !!

Hope you've got some relief

So I know the quack said it could take a while for the extra amatripaline to work but I've woke up this am groggy but feeling bright. Plus and this is a big plus on sticking my arm out out the duvet n letting my body temperature drop. I've only had a dull ache in my middle finger and in my shoulder. This is a huge improvement to the horrible squeezing pain I usually get! I can cope with this so fingers crossed this isn't a one off and the extra ama is working. Ya never know PTU might have some energy for sex soon.

Lots of a happy PTU XXX

"I'd make a real fuss at the docs.

Maybe not the best judge "

Last time I went to a&he was to have a digit reconnected. Not at alll painful when I went in, then they gave me that gas and air shit and tried to reset it- that wasn't at all fun

"Honestly if the pain is making you sick or unable to sleep or function id get it looked at, have they given you anything for the nerve pain? I have nerve damage and on Gabapentin to ease the pain and make it more manageable.

Do you have an out of hours GP at your hospital you can see other than A&E, I also find that if i ring my GP and ask to speak to the duty doctor they will then arrange an appointment same day or next x

I suspect gabepentin is what I need to be on, atm I'm on amatripaline and zapain. I always try to see my doc for continuity of care, but I suspect I'm going to have to be less fussy n more proactive with this one. I am finding that it's easy to fob us off. Xxx

Ama are terrible for it i was on them originally & did nothing bar make me want to eat all the time, i now have gabapentin, oxycodone, short release for severe pain & long release twice a day to lessen my pain, also have aciclovir as my immune system is low, vitamin D supplements and zapain.. i rattle now but it keeps me from being in pain x

Xxx"

Its news to me that they have taken Tramadol off the list in Wales, I can still get prescribed it if I need it?

Well, that's disturbing!

Two possibilities

first, my doctor is out of touch.. which is worrying!

second, yours told you that as he/she didt want to prescribe them for some reason?

Either way, one of us is getting poor service.
