Darlington and beyond

My son's asked me today if I'll buy him a car so he can start 'grass tracking', he's 11 but apparently you can start when you're 12..

Thing is, I used to ride motorbikes and had a pretty bad crash and ended up in hospital, not as bad as my friend who lost his fingers, then later his life.

I know it's not the same, but should I think about it and live with the risk of injury...?

Dude i race motocross and its a brutal sport but just think of the fun you had and the friends you made threw the sports. Do it the right way teach him whats right wrong and let the lad have fun

I agree.. and remember that lots of people do "dangerous sports" but don't die. Considerably more actually.

We're here for a good time... not a long time.

My other half does grass tracking, it's one of the safer ones, lots of rules and safety stuff. The social side of it isn't too bad either

As long as the car has a decent roll cage and good seat and harness he should be ok. Most series will be able to supply the regulations the car has to be built to and it will be well scrutinised by marshalls beforehand to make sure it's safe to compete. I held a competition license for many years and was a member of the B.R.D.C. and never had any form of off or accident, doesn't stop you as a parent worrying though.

As above make sure he has all the protective gear neck braces the lot, i wont get on my bike with out my armour and kneebraces, if its done correctly motosport is by far the best sport to get into

Most sports are dangerous in some way or another ? Motor sports have a pretty good safety record in general there are more people badly injured playing rugby or horse riding than most sports but it's the risk everyone takes when competing in any sport .

We can wrap our kids in cotton wool but that doesn't give them any life skills or character , but we can assess the risks in any sport and make sure we give them the right equipment, tools, coaching to keep them as safe as possible whilst they are doing something they enjoy

Good call, just remember when I was a kid I was reckless and always in bandages, different now I guess..

Have a look at Ministox,short oval motor racing with limited contact and limited engine power Racers can start racing at 10 to 16 yrs

We are grass track racers, cars are very safe, very strong rollcage and other safety systems the only thing I would add is a hans device or similar as I won't race without one since I bought mine.

Cars are much safer. Not decrying two wheels, but they leave you very vulnerable...

Grass track is a great way to get into motorsport. If you are buying a car make sure you have it checked over properly. If you are building yourself get advice. Speak to the technical people from your local race.

Firstly, your child needs to learn to drive. Your child cannot simply turn up to a meeting in say a Nissan Micra, which is in the lowest class and hope to compete, when they have no idea about clutch control, steering, braking etc. It would be embarrassing and suicidal, stalling the car, never moving from the start line.

Once your child has learned to drive, look at the NASA rules which govern autograss racing. Nothing to do with the space agency in America!

motorsport is great to get kids into. My daughter wants to get into it. She isn't old enough yet but have got her a rally driving experience for her birthday...

It's not for others to say... Its your child. X

Thanks. This one was funny as he's already been looking at cars and it was a Nissan Micra he pointed out.

He's tall for his age so he can reach the pedals but I'll look into all of this advice

My sons started mini moto racin at 6 & 7 oldest just waitin to get licence bac and other is 18 now and races a 750 at thundersport. Hav had some great proud moments with my sons.still am proud now watchin them

I don't know anything about grass track racing but I do know a thing or six about kids.

Kids will either do something with your knowledge, input and some degree of control or they will go ahead and do it anyway without you and the backup you can provide.

I know which I'd prefer.
