With a Lord today being convicted and sentenced to 9 months imprisonment for fraudulently claiming 14k in public expenses.

Should he and others convicted,now be stripped of his peerage ?

I always thought that a peer could not remain a peer if he/she had been sent to jail? Has there been a change in the law?

I think they should be publicly flogged and then striped of all titles. No joking. As a lesson to others. Corruption must be routed out of our society at every level, for big and for small.

Lord Taylor of Warwick becomes the fifth life peer allowed to remain in Parliament despite being convicted of a serious crime.

Even though he is almost certain to serve a substantial prison sentence, there is little the authorities can do to evict him from his seat in the House of Lords.

When he comes out of jail, Lord Taylor will still be allowed to vote on legislation and will be able to claim thousands of pounds in expenses.

Nothing short of a specific act of parliament for each convicted peer can bar them from the upper house. Labour repeatedly tried to bar criminals from sitting in the Lords – following anger over the fact that former Tory MP and novelist Jeffrey Archer could still sit there after serving a sentence for perjury.

But the legislation foundered along with the party’s attempts to reform the upper chamber and no act of parliament has yet been passed to expel a life peer.

Other criminal life peers include former Daily Telegraph proprietor Conrad Black, who was convicted of business fraud in 2007, and former Labour MP Mike Watson, who was found guilty of arson.
