So after 18 months out of employment i am feeling soooo much better and going to get myself back into work. Phoned up my previous employer (new manager) and asked if they'd have me back.. I have an interview Monday

Im shitting it.. i have no idea how to write a CV & Covering letter..

I want this sooooo much and think thats why i dont want to fuck it up royally

Been trying to plan childcare and checked out the various options. Im a lone parent and although it would be nice if the workplace could meet me halfway when it comes to compromise i dont want to be fussy so that puts them off taking me on again.

arghhhh!

oh and then no idea what to wear.. im so not a smart person,, im living in gym gear haha

There will be an organisation near you that can help with all of this. Ask at the JobCentre in the first instance if you don't know where to start.

Look up agency websites as some have CV tips on them.

Dress in clean and comfortable clothes (not gym gear).

Remember that you have been there before and there is a shortage of workers on your line of work. Sell them on what you learned last time, what you would do differently and what you can give them this time around.

Ive done volunteering and charity work whilst out of employment so hopefully that will give me 1/2 a brownie point.

Im lucky that im a confident speaker so unlikely to give the 'umms' and 'errr' type answers to questions. Ive a passion for healthcare so fingers crossed that will shine through, plus ive lots of friends who still work there. Its just the manager i am not familiar with.

Having an interview with an employer you already know is quite cool

Hopefully a comfort for you in a strange kind of way.

Cv writing isn't difficult. Be honest and concise and highlight any achievements.

I'm sure you'll suss the interview clothes, but smart and conservative - tits in on this occasion. Don't go OTT on makeup and jewellery and hair either smartly done or tied back.

Take a copy of your CV with you along with pen and paper and have done questions prepared in advance to ask back.

I worked in that place the day it opened.. i was a HCA.. then swapped to Activities CoOrdinator..

The passion has always been hands on care work, but im flexible and think as a HCA its always good to privide mental and physical stimulation when time is allowed.. It can be veryy busy

Keep your cv down to a level matching the job. Don't try to pad it out to make yourself look important as it'll backfire but on the other hand if you have had responsibility beyond what is standard for the role make sure you include it. Don't let it spread over more than two pages for the same reason

As for the covering letter it doesn't need to be very long. A third of an a4 is more than enough unless you are applying for management positions etc. In it write in your own words why you want the job, why you'd be the ideal candidate and what you can bring the organisation. Highlight previous experience and willingness to take on responsibility should the opportunity arise.

Both your cv and cover letter needs to be proof read by someone who will spot your spelling and grammatical mistakes.

Cv writing is a pain, mine has now bloated to nearly eight pages and I shudder at the thought of having to update it again soon.

Google the company again or find it on similar sites, so you have an up to date background of their aims.

Cover letter:- Dear Sir/Madam, I would like to be considered for the 'whatever' position of employment.... blah blah blah.

CV... Two pages max... brief, concise but selling yourself and your skills.

Interview! I really am crap at these but obviously, smartly dressed, keep eye contact, don't be frightened about referring to a notepad to ask your own questions but don't press.

I can't say it'll work but it's similar advice that a good friend gave me after a spell of all day TV! But it worked for me.

...... I suppose it's very much the same as trying to find the right people/person on here. Lots of them but not really what you or they looking for!

If the position is for a HCA post do some homework before the interview, even though you know the company. Google 'the 6 c's of nursing' and try to think of a good example for each one. E.G How do you as a HCA demonstrate compassion? Think about how care maybe delivered in the future (joint health/social work teams, the introduction of Nurse Associates, nurse apprenticeships)

Personally I don't think it is needed, as they are normally used to apply for a job either off spec of applying directly to a job advert.

You have been asked to come in, they will still have your previous personal file so will have your info to hand already, but an up to date CV will be essential so it is good you have one you are happy with x

I recruited in my last role. Have someone proof read everything? for you and make everything as relevant as possible.. you have the advantage of knowing the role already so make sure you use that too.

What sort of job is it? Dress is dictated by that.

Yeah got my interview outfit freshly pressed and hung up ready. Opting for a smart plain top (covering boobs

) and black trousers with flat shoes that are practical

Its to potentially become a Health Care Assistant.

Im lucky that i remained close friends with the manager i previously worked for (we both left the company) and is willing to give me a character reference. She also went over the CV and said it was spot on so thats a good thing as she is a manager for a care company in a new company

All the advice in the thread is great so not a lot more to add...Be yourself as you are the best person to sell yourself to them. Wear comfortable smart clothes, if you were a guy I'd also say make sure your shoes are polished lol.

My DBS is an ongoing one as i paid for the 'update service'.. i'll pack ID in the car but dont want to look overly keen by presenting everything at once

There's a website called cv library. You upload a cv and they match you to vacancies.

It will also get you contact from employment agencies.

They also have a covering letter which you can use for each application. You can use as is or add to it x

Smile, be human and engaging. Know a few things about the company and show what you can bring to it-how you can help them.

If you have a few minutes, think if examples of when you've done good things - e.g. Solved a difficult situation, worked well with others.

The personality bit is important though - these people are thinking "do we want this person around for ---- hours a week". It's boring interviewing people all day, believe me. Something that subtly breaks that boredom like a shared laugh goes a long way.

Very rare before an interview. You'll get through it fine - just be knackered after.

One more thing - think what questions you're going to ask them at the end. If you have time now, try to find a couple that show you know a bit about them. Off the top of my head - "I see you have a new office in Glasgow, will I be working closely with them?". Not the best example, but you get the picture.

Show them you cover the classic bases - capable, knowledgable and committted, then just try to inject a bit of your personality. They don't want a robot. Make them smile/laugh (don't tell crap jokes though).

Yep, dying won't get you the job.

Sorry, crap joke (the kind you should definitely not use at interview).

It's a very good point - far better to spend the last few minutes breathing calmly than cramming information in a stressed brain. You'll remember more that way anyway.

I try to breathe slowly and tell myself that, no matter what happens, I'm bloomin great. Obviously, I'm an idiot in reality, but it does help

turns out he just asked the people i used to work with.. they also said they would happily give me character references so dont need to worry about those

there are lots of ways of working without being employed or ever having to have an interview

i've worked for myself before and made money through all sorts of none standard routes. unhappiest i've ever been is holding down a 9-5..screams of grimness to me

pleny folk are self employed or take their own routes to making money

when i was on jobseekers they gave me a voucher for some suitable shoes as i didnt have the money and the place i was going to was quite specific to the type required - and i know some places like johnson will give you free drycleaning for an interview suit/jacket type of thing - so im sure there is help out there - good luck
