Little OCD traits you have ..

After ironing a shirt, I have to have the top of the coat hanger pointing left as you look at it (so it looks like a question mark) and when I hang it in the wardrobe the 'buttoned' side of the shirt has to always face leftwards as you look at it too. If any are put in the other way around disturbing the order of them all then I literally HAVE to change it otherwise it will bug and frustrate me until I do!

I have a few other things as well but what are those little annoying things that MUST be done a certain way in your day to day lives otherwise you just can't settle?

Please don't trivialise OCD with these examples, unless it affects your life in a negative way, it's just a quirk, something most of us do.

CD's and LP's all have to be arranged in alphabetical order by artist and album title. Electronic media has to be tagged and alphabetised correctly.

Though this is more due to the amount I have and ease of finding them than any OCD traits...well, that was how it started, anyway!

I can't sleep if the bedroom door isn't shut properly either.

Thinks being equally spaced. Like ornaments.

Clothes in wardrobe set out neatly and correctly.

Towels folded nicely in airing cupboard.

But maybe thats just to do with me being neat and tidy as a person though?

As Topsy said through, they're behaviour traits and quirks, rather than true OCD, which is far more debilitating.

Of course, to be clear I was intending to trivialise anyone with real OCD, and understand that this can be a real issue for many.

Mods can you rename to 'Little quirks you have' if this does cause any unintended offence

Hopefully most people will recognise that this isn't an attempt to demean anyone with OCD and that people won't be offended.

. I also have to have shirts like this dan

My others are,

Polishing the door handles on every internal door and then repeat polishing throughout the day

Everything in the house has to be straight and equal distances from each other, eg, ornaments, pictures, dining room chairs and so forth, the house is fairly clutter free so it's not as mad as it sounds,

I plump cushions and straighten the sofa all day long, but more importantly I have to do it before i leave the house, everytime I go out

The usual near straight cupboard tins

An odd one is my morning and evening routine for myself, so everything has to be done in order and I do it twice a day, eg, shave legs then underarms then foof, then wash body, then face, then foof

I also brush my teeth as part of that except I also brush my teeth everytime I'm leaving the house

I was my hair once a day

Ok so I have others but I expect everyone's getting bored now

Can I just add though, I may sound a little mad but I'm really honestly not, I am happy as I am, none of this drives me mad and it doesn't bother others around me, I do get anxious though if these things are not done

My youngest son suffers with OCD and I wasn't offended, I have my own quirks. All the bank notes in my purse have to face the same way and go from 5's at the front to 20's at the back. I'd put our DVD collection in alphabetical order but the kids mess them up so I try not to look at them otherwise I'd be spending everyday putting them right. Toilet rolls have to hang over not under.

Light switches : I have a few around the house where I have two side by side, but some are dual control with another switch on the other side of the room.

If they're both either on or off then they both must either be 'up' or 'down' - I can't have one switch up the other down in any 'side by side' pair. I have to go to the other side of the room to turn that one on or off so that the pair that are together have their own symmetry.

(If that makes sense, I know what I mean at least but it's difficult to put into words! )

. Your right topsy it is, I had a very specific trigger for how i am, although I'm sure this is not the case for everyone, from that trigger it has almost become something that helps me keep control, so whilst all these things and others are done i feel fine, if something should prevent me from doing them I do suffer from anxiety

I could have help I'm sure but I feel ok about how I am, I recognise it and I am not ashamed or embarrassed by it, it's a bit like love me, love my ocd, we laugh about it at home, if I truly believed it was affecting others around me then I would seek help Mrs blue eyes

I think thats pretty usual too .

I dont know many people who go around with bank notes screwed up in their wallet or purse?

If they do they are probably just scruffy bastards.

Seems peoples quirks are more to do with just people being more tidy and organised than others.

IMO OCD like most things can be scaled from trivial/minor to extreme. These things are important to us as subjective individuals so no one can place a factor of importance or state how trivial it is other than ourselves.

My quirks are:

Locking doors/my car multiple times.

MP3 tagging must be done in a specific manner.

Dates in documents must be written consistently and on files/folders must be written YYMMDD.

I don't like people brand matching sports clothing

I knew someone whose marriage almost broke up due to his ocd.

He had to jump from the second to last stair on to a certain part of the hall carpet and if he didn't land on the exact spot repeated his actions until he did. He had to enter rooms, shut doors, turn off lights etc a specific number of times and if he was interrupted or lost count had to start again, not just with the light or door he was on but from the first in line. He washed his hands until they were raw. His wife died which made it ten times worse

Just a little insight to me and my ocd, I'm not sure about those of you with small traits, I wouldn't know if they are ocd or a need to be organised, my need is the need for feeling of calm, my routine is exactly the same everyday, I have a fear, ( I don't want to go into) about what could happen if I don't do these things

I'll include a few more,

I get up before everyone else everyday to clean, including wiping kitchen sides, polishing, hoovering, mopping, cleaning all of the bathroom etc, all of this including beds made gas to be done before I leave the house, on a weekday that's by 8.10 am, I can't leave the house without it done, but to add, I have to do these things in order and the same order everyday

I also have to wash and iron everyday but again in order as odd as it sounds I even hang the clothes on the clothes horse or line in the same order

When I open curtains they have to be exactly the same on both sides and only open to a certain distance on the curtain pole

There are so many things, it may seem they take up my whole life but truly honestly when you do the same thing at the same time in the same order everyday, it really doesn't take that long Mrs blue eyes

"I knew someone whose marriage almost broke up due to his ocd.

So wife dying rather than OCD that put a spanner in the works and broke up the marriage.....

"

No, they were living apart in the same house before she was diagnosed with cancer.

stupid as it sounds, my (male) ocd is time, i hate being late or people not turning up on time etc, if i ever am running late, i start off by breaking into a sweat and getting agitated, then my heart starts beating faster, and they all increase until i have done what i was trying to do or arrived at where i was going

so being in a time critical job was not a good career choice lol

That must be really hard and frustrating to watch a loved one like that actually and completely tiring for them of course.

We all display some symptoms of what could be termed a mental illnesses, OCD, Asbergers, Depression, even Sociopath. The difference between mentally healthy and unhealthy is what is in control most of the time.

Using the traits to keep your life on track is healthy, if those same traits take over and cause a train wreck of your life it's unhealthy.

It can be far more than a quirk, and even unstoppable, but it does not always mean it's wrong.

Hangers have to face the same direction. Different colour hangers for each clothes type. Items packed in the grocery cupboard equally spaced labels facing forward. Systematically packed grocery trolley in the supermarket. Unpack said trolley by category.

Needed a 7 year old bank statement the other day. Found it in under 30 seconds. Now thats just sad.

I agree with this completely, when I first went to my doc n was diagnosed with anxiety my doc said if your "issue" is effecting your life negatively and stopping you from living then it's a problem that needs attention. Now I always think of that when my anxiety hits me and it helps me put my anxiety into prospective. Xx

When putting plates and bowls away the largest set has to go on the bottom with the smaller set on top, in sets.

All cupboard doors and draws must remain closed when not being used.

Before we got a dishwasher all dishes had to be stacked neatley.

We can do mixed recycling but I have to make sure each bag is card or plastic or foil. Mixes make my eyes burn!

I know I have loads more but I don't remember them until I have to act because of them haha.

I rarely put plates away in the cupboard. They're just left on the draining board after being washed up.

But cupboard doors do have to be shut when not in use, cutlery has to be the same way round in the drawer and tins have to be the right way round in the cupboard.

Clothes I'm not fussed how they go in my wardrobe.

Weights in the gym...

Why people can stomach not putting them on the racks in symmetry or in size order I'll never know!!!

Nothing worse then getting a 20kg plate from one side, walking around to find out there isn't one on the other! And why on earth would I want to use a 5, then a 20, then a 2.5, then a 10kg plate?

Why would I ever want to pick up a 40kg and a 25kg dumbell at the same time?

Just put them in order damn it, that way I dont need to have a workout sorting them before my workout..

And while I'm at it, don't put the kettle bells away so you cant see the weight written on them, don't leave your attachments on the cables, don't leave the benches at an untidy angle, coil the rope neatly in a clockwise direction, put the TRX straps back in a even position, roll you Matt up properly, and whatever you do... At no time ever... I mean ever.... Wear odd socks or ill start rearranging you as well!!

Not that I have any issues..

it's more common than you'd think seemingly. if you can make it fit into or around your life then more power to you but i think in my friends case it's spilled over to the point that life has to fit around it, nobody really goes round any more, you can see the anxiety she has when there are people there, a few christmas's ago she had a breakdown because he was making the dinner and she spotted a drip of meat juice on the floor..that ended in tears as she wanted a full kitchen disinfect, the children walk on eggshells a bit, they don't like bringing friends in, stuff they fetch from school is given a spray, even the shopping gets a disinfect before going away, and then the counters where the bags were sat will get a disinfect, bags will be binned and never kept. he owns a takeaway and spends considerably more on cleaning products at home than at work! telephones is another one, she keeps breaking them spraying disinfectant on them...they've spent low thousands on therapy and such but it doesn't seem to have helped a great deal yet. it's become a real runaway issue for them.

Not really OCD,but I have a certain way of doing household chores that just makes things that little bit easier......

I'll give the dishes a wee rinse as soon as I've finished using them, just so there's no dried up n congealed sauce/fat etc on them when I wash them properly.

Also before I hang up my laundry I'll give each item a good shake to get the worst of the creases out.....I very rarely iron anything, the odd shirt n pair of trousers if I'm going out that's about it,so this makes thing so much easier.

This actually caused an argument with my ex when she offered to hang my washing up!

Because she's used to ironing all her clothes she just chucked them on the clothes horse without giving them a shake or even making sure stuff wasn't folded over itself stopping it from drying out properly!

While I appreciated her offering to help, after seeing how she was chucking stuff on the clothes horse I just had to intervene n try to tactfully show her the right way to do it.....which she wasn't happy about one bit!

Probably one of the many reasons I'm single now! How hard is it though to hang up some clothes without it looking like you've literally thrown them on the clothes horse n just walked away?

Fucking dozy bint!

it's more common than you'd think seemingly. if you can make it fit into or around your life then more power to you but i think in my friends case it's spilled over to the point that life has to fit around it, nobody really goes round any more, you can see the anxiety she has when there are people there, a few christmas's ago she had a breakdown because he was making the dinner and she spotted a drip of meat juice on the floor..that ended in tears as she wanted a full kitchen disinfect, the children walk on eggshells a bit, they don't like bringing friends in, stuff they fetch from school is given a spray, even the shopping gets a disinfect before going away, and then the counters where the bags were sat will get a disinfect, bags will be binned and never kept. he owns a takeaway and spends considerably more on cleaning products at home than at work! telephones is another one, she keeps breaking them spraying disinfectant on them...they've spent low thousands on therapy and such but it doesn't seem to have helped a great deal yet. it's become a real runaway issue for them. "

. Aww bless her so much, I actually do also do a lot of those things, we also don't get many visitors( we love the ones we do get all the more) I have had the tears and the meltdowns, the not wanting to invite people round, the kids I suppose have learnt to live with mum being a bit odd I have managed to teach myself to stop a lot of what I do, but I still am doing all the above things, I guess for me it was accepting that I am who I am, and hoping others will accept me too, and so far it's working, I do start a lot of my sentences with, 'OK I have ocd......' We really do just laugh about now though, my heart goes out to her, it really does, I have no answers, I just hope she finds peace at some point, because that's what she needsxxxxxxx Mrs blue eyes

"Not really OCD,but I have a certain way of doing household chores that just makes things that little bit easier......

Thats why its best to do it yourself "

Lol,aye if you want something done right.......would've saved a lot of hassle n prevented a hissy fit n her giving it "OMG! Right them mr perfect....OCD or what...tsk!"

"I knew someone whose marriage almost broke up due to his ocd.

His wife died which made it ten times worse "

This sounds more like someone on the autistic spectrum .....
