hi i live on my own it cost me £400 pounds a year would i be better with a water meter and how mush would i save many thanks

Think the general rule is less people than bedrooms then it's worth changing, but i'd guess a water meter will always be the better option for a single person.

We don't have a meter and pay £35 a month, where as our neighbours that have 6 living in a 3 bed house and have a water meter pay £80 a month.

When we moved here the previous occupant had refused a meter. We had one installed and the bill halved. Although £400 sounds quite cheap anyway maybe ask neighbours who are on meters.

so if you did get one keep an eye on it just in case you get a leak you can't see, you would notice by the amount of water you're 'using' going up considerably. mine is locked away under the street so nobody noticed until the meter reader looked at it 6 months later.

I'm on a water meter and I'm paying £18 a month...

The first year I was on it they overcharged me by quite a lot so they readjusted my bill and I ended up paying just £1 a week for a while

When we moved about 15 years ago we read the water meter and submitted it to the appropriate authority. We received a bill for over £15,000 because we'd misread it. When we rang to correct the mistake the lady told us in all seriousness not to pay it

Hubby had a meter put in when he bought the house as it made more sense for a single man. When I moved in the bills didn't change.

We've now got a 1200 litre hot tub which gets emptied and refilled every 4 months and we still pay the same, around £12 a month

I was in a rented property about 10 years ago which didn't have a water meter,my annual bill was over £400. I moved to where I am now, and the bill halved in the first year....and that was with kids using hoses in the summer to fill paddling pools etc. My current bill is £150-£175 per annum; I get a rebate on waste water as I have a water sump or something.

I live on my own in a 1 bed flat and have to pay £7.20 p/w. It was just over £3 when I moved in 3½ yrs ago

something to think about is if you aren't on a meter then your water bill is worked out the same way as your council tax. so living in a cheaper home might not save you money.

It has been in the Daily Snail that if you want to switch suppliers their software for smart meters is not compatible which can lead to difficulties.

Always wise to do some research.

Wish I never had a water meter as I have 2 showers a day and 3 baths a week . Then there's the dishwasher and washing machine at least 3 times a week.

Mine would be cheaper without a meter.

And things like using lawn sprinklers are a luxury too if you have a meter.

Hang on.....you pay for your gas and lecky for what you use. So you would be happy if they said I'll tell you what we'll charge you 5 grand a year for them!

No you would be up in arms as you know you don't use anything like that in a year and the same goes for water....most people do not use anywhere near what they are being charged for it.

If you don't have a meter, the water people assume you use a lot....and will charge accordingly just to make sure that they don't miss out on revenue. I have a friend who has a large family and also fosters, she didn't have a meter but then got one fitted, and her bills went up. Multiple nightly baths and the washing machine on constantly are the biggest culprits. I suppose logically, we should pay for what we use.

Exactly this. Most people i know with families and gardens etc to water n tend to have higher bills on a meter.

I wish i never had one so i didnt have to worry about putting sprinklers on my lawns and having 7 baths a week etc

The water rates in 2005/6 were £350 but for the first year with the water meter I was paying £16 a month or £192 a year. I am now down to £13 a month or £152 a year. I wold think the old rates wold be in the region of £450 a year now.

The newer meters would pick that up quicker, I believe. A friend had a leak and the water company knew within weeks because the usual use rate jumped dramatically.

No, haven't had a bath for years!!!

But I do shower daily. I don't have a dishwasher, and I probably do one to two loads of washing a week.

No, haven't had a bath for years!!!

But I do shower daily. I don't have a dishwasher, and I probably do one to two loads of washing a week.

I have water butts which collect rainwater all winter and I use a watering can in the summer filled from them to water the garden.
