Scotland Yard launched an inquiry after the dogs - one of them a puppy - were found collapsed yesterday inside a private car belonging to a Met police officer.

The animals, a Belgian Malanois and a German Shepherd, were left in the car as temperatures reached 29°C.

The dying animals were found by a staff member at the Met's dog training centre in Keston, Kent. They are thought to have been left in the car by their handler who was based at the dog training centre.

Staff smashed the car's windows to get into the vehicle and the animals were rushed to a vet but died.

The officer, whose car the animals died in, worked for Central Operations which includes police dog handlers.

The Met's Directorate of Professional Standards, the Independent Police Complaints Commission and the RSPCA have been informed about the deaths. Sources said an internal inquiry would consider a possible criminal prosecution.

The officer, whose car the animals died in, was said to be "distraught" at their deaths. The Met refused to comment on whether or not he was a dog handler or why the dogs were left in the car.

GRRRRRrrrrrrrr there can be absolutely no excuse for this ,full weight of the law needs to be thrown at this individual ,those poor dogs ....

It think it was Nottingham last year, when a single dog died in similar circumstances.

IIRC the offender was prosecuted and fouund guilty. Don't remember the punishment though. Maybe just a biggish fine.

Disgaceful... there is never any excuse for dogs to be left in cars.

The officer responsible for the previously mentioned similar case in Nottingham, went to court and was prosecuted. The same fate beckons this case too and rightly so.

so why do people still do this to poor defenceless animals....and babies too.. all too often you go past cars parked in supermarkets in the mother/baby parkign areas and there is a baby sound asleep in the car seat in the car....it only take a few minutes of warm weather for the temperature in the car to rise dramatically...

Two down... that helps with the cuts the Police have to make!

Not only think of now another PC is now back on the beat;-albeit another copper with a record, but also, the money saved on Dog food, finally of course, the cost of compensation that the dogs deaths have saved. Do you know how much money each Force pays out each year because the dogs have bitten the wrong person. Notice I wrote Police Force, it was once a Police Service.

Hot dog anyone??

Ps, I write this with absolute disgust for any person who can be as selfish to "forget" that they are the guardians for any living human or animal. Included in my family are two dogs, very much cared for and loved...
