I call mine mum in private and by a shortened version of her name in company. This started as a result of the extended family getting much bigger, when one kid shouted mum 5 would come running

My 4 kids call me mum but when they were little and we were shopping for school uniforms they had to shout out my real name so I could distinquish them from all the other cries of "Muuuummmm"

A mate of mine has called his mum 'mags' for as long as I've known him. Her name is Margaret. She doesn't seem all that fussed by it though.

Just goes to prove the lack of respect that some people have for their elders.

My Mother or father would have killed me if I'd done that - likewise if I addressed a neighbour by their Christian name, it was always, Mr, Mrs, Aunty or Uncle .... but never their Christian name

I personally don't see it as a lack of respect but rather that society has adapted and changed. I have a wonderfully close and loving relationship with both my parents which includes the highest level of respect on both sides

Any of my mates moms and dads were reffered to as mr or mrs....elder relatives were aaunt or uncle regardless if they were

I had an aunt pat and it wasnt till i was grown up that i found out that she was a cousin ..But it was a respect thing given to older people ....A lost world these days
