After seeing the recipe thread it had me thinking of good whole food meals you can knock up for next to nothin.

So how about so meals us oldies can pass on to the young on here?

I'll kick it off with one of my favourites....liver and onions which I can do for under £2 for 4 meals

depends how many you're cooking for, but the cheaper the veg and meat then the cheaper the meal. less then £1 for the potatoes.

you could replace the meat for cheese when the veg and potatoes have finished cooking, just drain the pot and grate cheese into it. it'll melt.

I did a lovely meal last week, got a huge side of trout from morrisons on offer cost £2.61, already had frozen veg in (servings were pence really compared to how much was in the bag) and a bit of rice that was on offer for £1 so for the 3 of us only had to spend £3.61 due to the veg being on the freezer already

don't do what i did and order 300 packets off ebay coz they were cheaper in bulk. still got loads left.

Making meals with eggs is cheap and healthy. I like to have scrambled eggs, with home made pico de gallo salsa, and some veggie sausage in a wrap.

To make it healthier, and a tad more expensive, ditch the wrap and top off with home made guacamole (mashed avocado, diced tomatoes and onions, lime juice, and a hint of salt, pepper, and cilantro). Yum.

Simplest food that I love is spaghetti -- with a curl of butter and splash of chilli sauce to wet it through, and well seasoned. Yum.

Sausage hotch potch. Feeds 4

12 sausages £2

Tin of baked beans £0.40

Tim of kidney beans £0.38

Tin of potatoes £0.19

1/2 pack streaky bacon £0.50

Chopped onion £0.10

Tim of chopped tomatoes £0.40. = £3.97. Less than a quid each

Pasta, onion, garlic, tin of tomatoes, cheese. Sweat onions and garlic, add tomatoes and simmer until thickened. Meanwhile cook pasta, serve with grated cheese. Feeds two for about a quid. Add tuna for a more substantial sauce.

Layer onions, sausages and baked beans, cook about 40 mins,top with mash, cook until browned. Not sure how much but feeds 4 cheaply.

Banana custard.

Ice cream with banana and chocolate custard.

Any pasta with own brand Philadelphia stirred in.

I often play find the yellow sticker game with my boys and freeze the bargains.

Then I make one pot wonders in the slow cooker.

pasta bake and stovies are also really cheap meals too.

Sausage chips and beans is a cheap meal. You can get 40 sausages for £2 at iceland, 10kg bag of potatoes (£2.80), tin of beans (29p). Plenty left over for another day.

Jacket potato with cheese (£2 - 450g - icland) and salad (£1 - coop)

Egg (£1.69 for 30) and chips with beans.

Chicken and stuffing pancakes.

Make pancakes and leave to go cold, a chicken leg cooked and shred the meat, make up a packet of stuffing and mix in the shredded chicken . Spoon some onto a pancake and fold over to seal. Bake in the oven, goes nice with whatever you want to accompany it.

Don't think it has to be way out.

Lots of supermarkets have joints or chickens for £5 . Adding potatoes or pasta and veg is pence.

A joint or chicken can also do the next days lunch or evening stir fry.

Real home-made pizza with home made dough comes in stupid cheap and is fun with the kids too.

I don't cost my meals out per person but you can't much cheaper than using up all those leftover veggies, the ones lurking in the fridge & chucking them all in a soup together. Use something like a butternut squash to give it some depth along with a sprinkling of Garam Marsala or Smoked Paprika.

was six people at an after party years ago, early morning hours and all that we foraged around that house was pretty much Pasta, bottle of sweet chilli sause and cupboard full of spices.. feeds six i can tell you that! No butter though

You cannot beat the old staple I was brought up on as a kid, Mince and Potatoes!

Minced Beef or Pork.

Potatoes (pre boil, then cut into chunks)

Onion.

Gravy or Stock.

Worcestershire Sauce.

Salt / Pepper to season.

Nice one that's my kind of food too.

Here's another one "Panackelty" it's a north east dish....a tin of corned beef two or three sliced carrots,sliced onions and Potatoes. ..sliced of course. 3 oxos and cornflour. ....prep 10 minutes cook half a hour and a big pan full for around £2.50-£3.00....eat with bread optional

Uni special was packet of bacon, rice and eggs. Do your rice throw it in a frying pan cook the bacon half throw all in a wok and breaks some eggs over it

Make your own beans on toast with butter beans, tin of tomatoes,paprika,garlic, red wine vinegar (opt) and crusty sliced bread. Add cheese if you want.

It's really tasty and very filling.

I have herbs and spices, tomatoes and condiments I use to flavour food. They can make most things edible.

A 375g bag of dried soya mince for £1.90 lasts me ages. I make up batches for the freezer of Bolognese or Chilli con carne style sauces (tin chopped tomatoes 31p, tin kidney beans 50p,chopped onions, peppers and mushrooms, plus herbs or chilli powder and half a pint of stock). Cheap, quick to cook, low fat, low calorie and high protein. I serve it with a baked sweet potato.

Bag of frozen mixed veg - £1

Enough to make 5 portions of stir fry (if you already have spices and soy sauce/chilli) costs around £3.70.

74p a portion.

vegetarian ocean pie you can make for about a fiver and will feed 4 to 6 people depending how hungry you are, really nice too

just need tofu, mushrooms, sweet corn,parsley sance and potatoes

flour 20p

Yogurt 20p

spices 20p

feeds 4 easily ,we have bread maker so makes dough easy to make and knead

I'd love to know where you can find a whole chicken for £2.35 lucky to get one under 4 quid around here!
