Headline on BBC news website :

"Mandarin salaries to be disclosed"

Article here : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-13875508

In a nutshell, top salaried public sector workers have lost a battle to prevent their salaries from being disclosed.

Simply, they are paid by the public, it's in the public interest to know what they are.

Fair do's, let's hope it works it's way down the scale too.

Recently the government did disclose a spreadsheet of some 39,000 public positions which paid £100k or more. Many are named in person. Makes interesting reading ( if yer bored ).

On the matter of Mandarins having their salaries disclosed, i wonder if they'll do it by segment?

Tell you what I don't understand.

Why do public employees pay tax at all?

Why don't we just pay them their net pay instead?

What they are to be paid is known in advance. Any bonuses could surely be worked out separately.

Thus we get rid of all the extra unnessacary accounting/payroll, which is hardly cheap, and reduce the work of HMRC, while hopefully reducing a bit of tax?

Good idea? Naive idea? Whaadya think?

One needs a history of tax/NI paid as you go through your working life. The state pension is reliant upon 30 years of N.I. contribs out of a possible 49 working years (assuming retirement at 65 for men and women for ease of purpose). If you do not pay N.I. under the guidelines in the OP, you wouldn't have the correct amount of qualifying years for entitlement to the basic state pension.
