"Just something smart and dark for respect Xx" black shirt and tie sounds ok provided it's smart. The bit I was more concerned about was the "I know some people might be offended but I don't care" - I'm not sure I would be quite so blasé about causing offence at a funeral but from what the OP describes I think the attire is fine!

"If no request were made specifically, I'd go with black. My dad requested no black or boiler suits! He was an engineer and lived in them and had a fsirly twisted sense of humour. So, for his service, that is what I wore, along with my brother and several members of our close family." Oh dear, that sounds like I went against my Dad's wishes. He wanted us to wear boiler suits and specified no black, bright colours only.

"Seems strange to say some people might be offended but you don't care. The funeral is about the deceased person and beginning closure for friends and relatives. I don't know the situation between you and the deceased. Please be sympathetic to what you think and what other people want from this important day."

"i think times or changing , whereas we used to mourn at funerals its changed to celebrating there life .. id wear smart casual , as long as you dont look like the odd one out , where what your happy wearing . ties are old hat in my opinion , dont see the point in wearing one . suit with open neck shirt always looks smart" but I'm thinking not smart enough if everyone else is in ties.

"I am going to a funeral today and I must say I am breaking away from the traditional white shirt and wearing a black shirt with black tie Now i know that some people might be offended but I don't care. My funeral I want everyone to come in football shirts but that's me What would you normally wear " I think you have to judge it on the relationship you had with the deceased

" I think you have to judge it on the relationship you had with the deceased " This Surely it's about how you wish to pay your respect and not how everyone else wants you to. If others were demanding how I should go about my mourning, I'd stay away.

"After going to two funerals in the last few weeks I was shocked at what people do wear, but then maybe I am just old school. Black plus a white blouse for me unless they asked for something specific. I wouldn't dream of wearing something and not caring whether I offend the people who have lost loved ones though " PS I don't think you would offend them with a black shirt though

If they want to wear ties thats upto them I suppose. But nice well fitted black suit and fitted black shirt without a tie still looks very respectable. I had lots of comments how nice I looked even though it was a funeral

"I turned up to one with a canary yellow tie after being told the deceased wanted bright colours. Guess what i looked a pratt as nobody else honored his wishes" Wife loved bright colours, so I requested that everyone wear a splash of something cheerful. Mine was a bright yellow shirt and purple tie, under a normal smart suit. Would usually follow wishes of the family. Otherwise, something subdued and respectful.

"My father was an accomplished ballroom dancer and taught it at a dancing school. He was much in demand in his region of the UK as a dance partner for all the female dancers attending dinners, balls, and dances. For his funeral, his request was for everyone to wear what they would for a dance. The ladies in the region turned out in force, over 300 of them, all in their finest dance gowns, all looking resplendent and so much colour too! His funeral wasn't sombre. His coffin had his dancing shoes, a cane and Top Hat on top as it was carried in to a Tango being played on the music system. Whilst a few tears, there were a lot of smiles & laughter. The Crematorium staff said it had been one the most colourful funerals in years, & had never heard so much joy at such an occasion. My father never liked funerals; always attended them paying his respects but said they were "a load of mumbo jumbo!" Hopefully, my brother & I got it right; if not, we've both got a helluva reception from him at the Pearly Gates!" That sound's lovely, you'll have done him proud!

"I've never worn black to a funeral, but always looked smart. First funeral I went to was my wife's, and I viewed it as a celebration of her and her life, and therefore, in my eyes, I don't wear black. Folk should wear what they want to ... Black shirt and tie sounds " At my son's funeral bright colours : just seemed wrong black for a baby. I didn't like the undertaker walking in front of the hearse appropriate either. However, the black clothing and the undertaker walking in front of my mothers coffin was apt. Folk should have the decency to adhere to the wishes of the family and the acumen to dress accordingly if dress code not specified.
