"If you can't afford to feed, clothe and house them don't have them. If you have more than 2 you should pay more tax, grossly unfair on the rest of the population funding their education etc!!" working parents pay for their own kids education, a child goes to pre school/school from 3 to 18 now thats 15 years, i have worked all my life and when i retire that will be about 50 years, i think I've paid my share

"People want child benefits stopped but dont bat an eyelid to bankers bonuses Both can go, in my opinion. Why though? What do you benefit if either go?" Ok, I'll be more specific and less flippant. I think bank bonuses should exist, but within reason. I think child benefits should be based on family income, not on how many kids you have. It's about proportionality. For both cases.

"China ended it's one child policy in 2015 because there were too many old people with a diminishing workforce able to pay for their care....society has become too top-heavy. I don't know what the answer to overpopulation is, but it's on its way to being a serious global crisis." Probably would have been better if they'd carried on with the policy, worked through the short term top heavy population problem and ended up with a more manageable population size 40 or 50 years down the line. There's a thread in the political forum asking what we're going to do 50 years from now when automation has replaced vast numbers of jobs and there's no work for potentially billions of people. We'd need to stop breeding or totally rethink our whole economic system.

" I'm right wing because I don't like child benefits and I'm in favor of limiting CEO bonuses? Ok. I wouldn't have kids if I couldn't afford them. Its as simple as that. I'm all for short to medium range welfare assistance for families in need based on total salary - but no, I don't think the number of kids you have should define the benefits you're entitled to, long-term. "Young girls with poor education and minimum wage earners have children so they can get social housing as there is no way they would get one without children. They would be destined to live in HMO's (bedsit land) like single guys have to do who are on low incomes. Having children is seen as the only option to get their own place and increased benefits by alot of young girls/couples." It's not as easy as that. Teenage pregnancy rates are down to 23 per 1,000 conceptions last year compared to 55 per 1,000 in 1971. One of the reasons attributed for this social media shaming teenagers for getting pregnant.

They need fewer labourers and more professionals, as those were the ones killed by Khmer Rouge. However there is a large move towards young couples getting their own places. They are definitely trying to move away from being a farming culture.

Totally agree but I don't think this subject should be so black and white I don't agree with people who sit on benefits as a life style choice But for some going on benefits isn't an option, if you have had a good job for 25 years and end up losing that job through no fault of your own I don't believe they should cap your benefits depending on how many kids you have, you have paid into the system for 25 years so why should you not get help for all your children under 18 while you look for another job? I don't think it should be a cap that applies to everybody's regardless of you circumstances

Maybe they could afford them when they had them, some peoples situations change Yes of course peoples situations change but there are a few people who just dont think it through properly. I don't think it should be a cap that applies to everybody's regardless of you circumstances " See, I agree with you in principle. But surely there are better, smarter ways of helping people in these (and similar) situations than the current child benefits system? I think there needs to be a rethink about how society gives assistance to those in need. There are better, and fairer, ways.

"I once read a fantastic short story where once the women where pregnant they had 9 months to choose who in their family would be sacrificed to make way for the new baby. If by the time the baby was born the mother had failed to nominate someone the baby would be sacrificed. I don't know who wrote it but it was bloody good n very thought provoking. "Id say no more than 3 really or if it helps that if you have over so many kids then you only get state help and housing for the first however many say 3 again and it may stop these 15kid families where the parents never work I think this is a great idea stops people having kids for cash. We have six kids between us, shall we kill 3 of them off?! Ruby So do we! But both work and all kids will be brought up the same and contribute to society... Don't feel like we are causing a problem ... X " Same here x

"Ok to put a spanner in the works!. A couple woman well documented in the media have numerous children. One refuses to work and gets a darn site more infact double what I earn in a month she goes on holidays abroad has designer clothes etc and openly admits to having more children to claim more in benefits. The other woman worked as a mechanic gave it up because part time she could t cope with the hours and looking after her 8 kids as it reduces her benefit. Both get houses paid for and get family tax etc It's well documented in the papers and on news they have also been on tv shows to discuss. I work and due to fertility issues can't have kids yet I pay tax which goes to support women like those two. Why is that fair? Why should I pay £400 a month in tax? Why did I have to pay for fertility treatment because through no fault of my own I can't lay on my back think of England and get pregnant. So yes benefits for people like them should be capped. They need to remember a child is a blessing not a god given right to free handouts that others can't have. " You pay £400 a month in tax? Wow you must be on a helishly large wage? "People want child benefits stopped but dont bat an eyelid to bankers bonuses Both can go, in my opinion. Why though? What do you benefit if either go? Ok, I'll be more specific and less flippant. I think bank bonuses should exist, but within reason. I think child benefits should be based on family income, not on how many kids you have. It's about proportionality. For both cases." Also i think the op wasnt actually about families claiming benefits and more that our countries resources cannot cope with growing population...

I don't think it should be a cap that applies to everybody's regardless of you circumstances " I dont think anyone would dispute the provision of temporary assistance ... and that kind of thing wouldnt be capped ... what is being capped it the "automatic money per child" system that exists at the moment Someone further up said they raised a child for 18 years why shouldnt they get some money back for it ... i know it might not be much but a tually why should you? Why is having a child seen as a service to the country the government should contribute to?

"Young girls with poor education and minimum wage earners have children so they can get social housing as there is no way they would get one without children. They would be destined to live in HMO's (bedsit land) like single guys have to do who are on low incomes. Having children is seen as the only option to get their own place and increased benefits by alot of young girls/couples." That wasn't the case for me then. I was a young mum had my son at 17 stayed why my mum and dad till my son was a year and a half as there was no house for me, plus I still worked and that was 18 Year ago. So your theory doesn't apply to every young girl.

Or every council, believe me under my council you do not get a house just because you have a child They are only obligated to make sure you have a roof over you head and round here most pregnant young girls either stay at home or end up in a hostel

"People want child benefits stopped but dont bat an eyelid to bankers bonuses Funny as isn't it. The people who rule our country are to blame for the state of it but no, let's blame people for having too many kids... Earlier on it was another thread about housing. Pisses me off! So many opinionated people on here. Personally though, I don't understand why an already struggling family have more children. It just doesn't appear logical to me. That's not being judgemental, it's being sensible. because it's actually nice to have children and a big family. the more you have the cheaper it gets to have them as you can pass stuff down to other kids. you're heating a house for 6 people takes the same amount as it would for one person. also, poverty brings you more spare time and gives you less of a sense of worth, having more children gives you a purpose and takes up that spare time. i never wanted any kids, i had 4. now they don't need me i'm on some shitty fuck site bored outta my tits. i'd love to have more kids and more family coz i don't like many people outside of my family. i think most people are fucked up, myself included, but only the people who get me are ok to bother with. "I understand that physical longing to have children and I imagine for some that it doesn't go away just because they have had one or two already. If everyone waited for the economically right time to have children very few would be born. We have more people accessing, or trying to access, fertility treatment because they have waited for that time when they are economically stable enough, have a home etc. They feel aggrieved that they have done the right thing and then can't access all the help they need from the NHS to get pregnant. For everyone that wants a cap I hope you don't need care in your old age as we are already facing a problem. " That's a really good point. For me personally, the possibility of not being able to have children when the time is right, is something I'm willing to risk. I don't know the economic backlash of what a cap on how many children you can claim benefit for would have, but I'd be interested to see.

"People want child benefits stopped but dont bat an eyelid to bankers bonuses Do you not think bankers have worked for their bonuses Behave yourself Do you not think parents work? depends if they have loads of kids. Then they don't have to. only if they hit the benefits lottery jackpot and have a disabled one. Really?? I have a "disabled one" and I still work. I'd far rather he didn't have his chronic life threatening condition than be raking in all this money you must think I get for having a "disabled one" That's without raising another 2 and paying a mortgage on a single wage I despair at some people sarcasm. as a carer, as well as a parent, i'm well aware of the attitudes people have. i am promoting the most unpopular ones as well as the popular offensive ones. Let's hope so aye else there is no hope if that is your attitude towards families with disabled children puts it in perspective though doesn't it? how is a popular offensive opinion more acceptable than one that isn't? both are offensive. i think you also don't know what sarcasm means." Just because its turned into a slanging match, doesn't mean its a political post. True! But I actually think this one has turned into a political discussion. I've seen less political threads get banished. I thought it was a political subject just from the title. Is the other place for purely party politics? " The Brexit post is still here too!

"People want child benefits stopped but dont bat an eyelid to bankers bonuses The difference might be that bankers bonuses are paid for by shareholders , child benefits are funded by the tax payer. What about the bailouts that came from out taxes? " That was a limited number of retail banks to stop the general public losing their money and stop the economy crashing further ... the 2007 crash was caused by investment banks which are an entirely different kettle of fish ... i work for a retail bank and in a uk market we actually make a loss for the service we provide, are not exessively paid and don't get massive bonuses but unfortunately the media just lumps us all in together under the banner of bankers

I worked in banking many moons ago. I am just countering generalisations with equally glib and nonsensical generalisations. The bonuses don't magically appear from nowhere. They come from charges which trickle down and are paid for by people in ways they don't always recognise. We all pay taxes, including children, through VAT.

To me, that's not sensible though, it's selfish. Having children because you want a big family when you can't afford it just doesn't make sense. I want things because they're nice, but I can't afford them, therefore I don't buy them. i was only poor because i'm not selfish though. i didn't have nice things but i have a nice family. i went without for them and was happy to do so. my kids are great, they aren't street rats and i invested quite a lot into them. and time was what i had to invest in them because i was poor. why can't i be selfish also? why can onl ypeople who don't want the poor to have kids be selfish? So you were selfish jad 4 kids had housing benefit and tax credits etc. I cant have kids I now can't afford ivf I also can't afford my own home. So me being selfish can I have some of the tax back you have had from my 25 years working please. Oh and if your kids are having kids the money they are getting. i'm sorry you couldn't have kids of your own but that's really not my fault just because mine could. But then it's not my fault you had kids you couldn't afford (you said you went without) yet my tax goes towards benefits. yes, i had them anyway. i don't owe anyone for having them either. although i'm grateful for any help i've had with them. you accepted, that to live and work in this country meant you would contribute taxes, as per the laws of this society, therefore you contributed willingly. I was born in this country I had no choice about that. i do NOT pay tax willingly as I especially be grudge paying it for people like you. Who clearly thinks it's ok to have what you really can't afford because the rest of us will pay. What happened to working, saving up and having what you can afford?. " i was born into the unprivileged, disadvantaged working classes so unfortunately i would never be able to save up for anything. so, rather than deprive myself of what was naturally given to me i took it anyway and coped with the shitty hand dealt to me. you see, when you have nothing you also have nothing to lose when you take a risk. it's fine you begrudge my children though, they don't really care and neither do i. they are here and blissfully unaware yet that people out there begrudge them life. only time i seriously considered having an abortion was when my partner was working but we decided not to there either. we're survivors and i passed that onto 4 healthy kids and proud to do so.

"There'd be no need to have this discussion if there was a fairer distribution of wealth within our society. But in terms of the side issue of taxes etc why do we pay taxes to keep the likes of Ian Huntley, Yorkshire Ripper,Hindley etc alive??? That money could be better spent on the NHS, social care, schools, Policing....."

" Ok im sorry for this in advance but i have to call BS on that right there Life is what you make of it not what you take from it I was born into a the same background , underpriviliged , single parent household , my mum sacrificed all the time just to clothe (spelling? ) and feed us But i worked hard in life , applied myself , still study on top of a full time job now and managed to save up and buy a flat on a single persons wage ... nothing fancy but it is possible Resigning yourself to the fate of your earlier generation is just a cop out

Your very good at twisting things. I never once said I begrudge your children I said I wasn't happy paying tax for women who think it's ok to have child after child and get double in benefits what I do working full time. You see no wrong in what you have done, I do and have a totally different view because I was brought up differently. I also was brought up in a middle class family my mum went back to work when I was two months old and I was looked after by grandparents she didn't want to work but had to so bills could be paid to keep a roof over our heads. They got into financial hardship when I was around 6 and lost everything tried to get a council house but other families were a priority so we had to live with my mums mate till they earned enough to change the situation. i don't believe in rewarding people with more money every time they have a child, benefits should be capped to two children if people choose to have more then they get a job and pay themselfs. It seems too many generations of families think it's ok to live on the benefits system and it's not.
