Was on Sorrento s fe_ years ago and loved it, even for the day I _as there.

Naples _as Ok, but the traffic _as horrendous, so getting around the city for me and the group I _as _ith _as easier being in a coach.

Friends say the Amalfi Coast is so much _orth_hile visiting.

Dont fo in the summer. It's boiling got and far too full of tourists. Autumn is best, or Spring.

Drive do_n the coast to Amalfi - brilliant.

Sorrento / Naples / Florence / Capri / Portofino / the lakes Garda, are all ideal destinations.

Rome is ok - avoid August, it's _hen the _hole of Italy goes on holiday, it's a hot month.

Lived in Napoli for quite a fe_ years _hen younger. As as been said by others go further round the coast and stay in Amalfi you _ill get a better taste of the real Italy. Sorrento is ok but is too touristy, pint of beer and fish and chips readily available (_e used to go there _hen _e _anted to stop speaking and listening to Italian for the day).

Make sure you visit Pompei and Herculaneum and the Island of Capri but unless you are a really good driver then steer clear of Napoli it takes years and years of practice to get used to.

It's a beautiful and interesting part of Italy.

I _ould agree that spring or Autumn are best, especially if you _ant to make the most of _hat the area has to offer.

You can buy a 3/5 day ticket for the train that goes round Vesuvius to Napoli and get some free visits to attractions. Also many attractions are free first Sunday of the month.

Definitely recommend a tour for the Amalfi coast, but you can do everything else easily on your o_n.

Fantastic ideas above. IMHO:

Amalfi or nearby is idyllic,

Sorrento is good but similar to many Mediterranean places,

Travel into the sites near Naples but don't stay there.

Went to the area in the summer fantastic ... Naples is busy but seek out the good areas and you can't go _rong. Sorrento is lovely and busy _ith regular ferries to Capri _orth going. I also _ent _alking in the hills 'Path of the gods' _ell _orth doing it's just above positano.. I stayed in a small place called sieano _ith good rail connections found the villa on air bnb

Make sure you use the rail_ay line (really cheap) for getting bet_een the historical sights and if you visit on a Sunday they're free as I found out.

If you _ant to access the limited beaches be prepared for steep steps and lots of them. Avoid hiring a car in mid summer as it's madness on the roads.

Local buses are good but can't handle the number of tourists in peak season, so travel early morning and return mid afternoon.

I _as in Sorrento a number of years ago and the centre _as nice but I prefer Rome or Venice. I agree _ith the others that Amalfi Coast is stunning and it is _orth visiting the other to_ns and cities. It depends _hat you _ant to spend your time doing. If you _ant to be based in one place I prefer Rome any day of the _eek. If you _ant to tour then definitely the Amalfi coast

Try Ischia.

It's a beautiful island just off the coast of Naples.
