Question marks

Can anyone explain the seemingly modern-day use of question marks?

I see things such as the following: Good morning??

Since when was good morning, a question? I'm just using this as an example but you see it a lot, when people are making a statement but using it as a question.

Am I missing something, or is it idiocy?

Depends how picky you are.

Good morning? To me means lazy speak for 'Are you having a good morning?' So I answer (or don't) appropriately.

It isn't usually meant this way, I think people just like the pretty little squiggle of a question mark.

Some emojis from people's phones or tablets show as question marks. It could be that they mean

Good morning

On here I know if non site supporters use smilies or if you use an unrecognised one they show up as "??"

It is very annoying!! It's a question mark ffs.

Dumbing down of society ??

I would be really happy it was as simple as a tech-failure

Either they are really insecure and need reassurance they really are. Or they like the pretty squiggle!

To be honest, it's why I'm glad we can't comment on people's status'. I'd get into a lot of trouble when sarcastic Red comes out to play.

Thanks for the explanation on here - but I do see it on other sites as well so part of me does wonder if it's just some weird bastardisation of English and the incorrect use of punctuation.

As for 'just liking the funny squiggle'.....sigh

or you could choose to assume it's because people don't understand how to use punctuation.

Didn't know that, that explains why it's a relatively recent trend.

Ask the next person who does it. They'll know for sure.

But it isn't just on here though - you see it everywhere.

I know that Facebook will accept the emojis from my tablet but I guess other sites don't.

It's simply people using their phone keyboard emojis.

Or is it?? ?? ??

Those were examples from other sites. I don't buy the 'emoji error' explanation. On here maybe. But the question mark phenomenon exists elsewhere too.

Big sigh....
