Cuts to housing benefits for 18-21 year olds

Little rant but I think this is atrocious... I had little choice but to leave home when I was 18 and without access to HB I would've been made street homeless. I work with young people who'd also be made homeless under this scheme. In my eyes, most of the time when someone in that age range needs their own place there's a damn good reason for it!

Thoughts?

If young people want to start being taken seriously by politicians then they had better start voting more. People have to look out for their own interests in society and young people have consistently failed to do so.

Who do they expect to argue for them when the inevitable budget cuts come if they won't fight for themselves?

They already receive a lower minimum wage and now lower housing benefit. Are they going to make 18-21 specific housing which is cheaper than everyone else's?

Aren't under 35s only entitled to the amount it should cost for a bedsit ? So I thought it was affecting everyone up to that age already.

I agree! So at 18, someone can fight for their country, obtain a mortgage, get married without parental permission, even become a damn local mayor... yet they'll be unable to claim a benefit which'll keep a roof over their head.

Single under 35s, yeah.

It's not quite so bad if you're lucky to be somewhere relatively cheap, like I am, but I wouldn't want to live in a big city on it.

For complicated reasons,I left home at 17. Without access to benefits I would have been homeless. Been paying higher rate tax for 15 years so I don't feel guilty. Ps fuck the tory party!

It's disgusting the cuts they're forcing through on the very people as a civilised society we are supposed to protect. But then in the same budget they are cutting the inheritance tax on homes for their wealthy chums. Double standards. I hate the tories.

If that's the current plan, it's better than the original which was under 25s.

On the plus side there will be lots of exceptions, such as care leavers, homeless young people, those with disabilities etc.

However, if you simply chose to move out then you won't get HB... I agree it's rather harsh.

The vast majority of benefit cuts seem to be unfairly targeted at young people and the vulnerable.

I also left home at 19, I'd of been screwed without that help. If people need help they need help reguardless of their age. What is our world coming to.

Unless young people actually vote (and 18 is old enough to understand the importance of that) then their views won't be represented favorably in government.

And I honestly don't have sympathy for people who won't even vote.

Because most youngsters at that age are on either the minimum wage or low paid jobs. Unless they go into a skilled job wages just don't pay enough to do everything on.

Agreed! I'm one of those assholes who thinks that those who don't vote, don't have a say not sure if that's harsh of me or not to be honest. What hits me is that when the statistics of the referendum came in (not going to discuss my views on Brexit as that's an irrelevant topic) it showed that the majority of our age range voted in, however not many of us actually voted and if we did, that could have really made a difference. It's a shame really, but some people just don't care all that much.

My point is an apprentice gets £3.40 an hour while someone at 25 gets £7.20, both scandalously low in my opinion.

But the point I'm making is does a 16 year old cleaner go to work on a cheaper bus than a 25 year old doing the same job?

Eh, the trend of young people not voting much has been going since the 70s. We can't blame Corbyn for everything.

Young people are going to have to own their own inaction. And they can reap the results with every policy that disproportionately affects young people.

I think that if young people make themselves a reliable voting block then politicians will have to think about their interests when they make policy decisions. As it is, older people vote more, and they vote consistently. And they are rewarded.

Why would a politician cut the budget for reliable voters in their next relection campaign in favor of policies supporting people who won't vote either for or against them? As a politician, if you want an easy target for budget cuts go for people in jail and 18-22 year olds, because they don't vote anyway.

Sadly, this is very much the case.

The "baby boomer" generation vote in droves. The younger you get the smaller percentage vote. Obviously any political party is going to want to keep its voters happy ... Hence protection for older people.

because at 16 you don't even know how to sweep up right and yes I do because when I left school at 15 to take up an apprenticeship I knew nothing and had to learn like everyone else so I'm sorry if my opinion upsets you tough

they can't really implement the benefits cap if people leave home and become outside of the family (and therefore outside of the cap), so i do think they know what they're doing there.

not sure why they think people do not need homes though. homelessness had gone up considerably under this government.

i had a job at 15, full time. my weekly wages were less than a weeks rent would've been at that time. i moved out when i had no job and could claim housing benefits coz i couldn't afford a home any other way. and that was way before 21 years old.

after that all i worked were jobs where i could also claim benefits or cash in hand.
