It's all about practice.

Set aside some time, take a shit load of photos in good light, natural if possible and then have fun playing about with cropping, filters etc

it's all in the lighting, moody and shadowy is really hard to get right, sunlight early or late in the day when it is low and bright directed through silvered blinds works well this time of year
