All coffee and tea goes in the suitcase.

Generally it is pretty much the same state as when I arrive though. And I'll usually make an attempt at washing the mugs out too

This is so me....and usually do it at least twice!!

If staying abroad, and there's a telly in the room I usually flick through the channels as one of the first things I do, just to see what local TV is like - can remember doing so with excitement the first time I went to the US (after hearing about their hundreds of channels for years)....first thing that appeared? Flipping Dot Cotton in an episode of Eastenders!!

Eat my weight in breakfast too. Usually taking things with me for later in the day. I normally have to skip lunch.

The Celtic Manor is my favourite. They have Welsh cakes as well.

Mine was a late checkout, I was in bed with a hot date just this week and room service just walked in, stood and stared, obviously no one had told them the situation.

Anyway, still had time for another play and tidied the room before we left as we know every little helps..

Removing clutter asap, including promotional materials, the throws at the bottom of the bed and surplus scatter cushions.

Lowering the room temperature as I prefer cool - this may mean selective curtain drawing.

Kettle on, it's time for tea - possibly my own tea, not hotel stuff.

Like others, my room is impeccably clean when I leave

We always leave the room tidy and clean with the bed sheets pulled back up as they were, which is stupid I suppose as the beds will be stripped anyway.

We tend to treat other people's property with respect.

I wouldnt say i disrespect a hotel but id never make the bed since no one will be in the room from the time i leave til the time the maid comes in and strips the sheets off ... seems like a waste of time and energy

Other than that and making sure i have everything with me that i brought i cant think what other mess I would be leaving behind

I tidy, empty kettle, strip bed and put all towels in the bath.

I too have worked in a hotel as a "maid" (as someone called them ) and it only takes a couple of minutes for me to do it but saves them a whole lot of effort. I'm a good guest.

I also check for cleanliness, if it's not clean I'll have a damn good moan!!!

I like to unpack everything as soon as I get there, make it cozy. Unless I'm travelling, then it all stays in the bag.

Tend to do a little tidy up too. Not sure why as I'm paying for the service but just want to help the staff out

I get my stuff together, chuck any rubbish in the bin, check the room in case I left something behind (including under the pillows where I sometimes leave my phone), and check out. If I spill anything during my stay I clean it straight up.

I leave used towels in the bath or shower tray, so they know they have been used. Some hotels tell you to do that -not the posh ones though.

Do you seriously realise that this can, subject to the alarm system type, cause problems with it working the way it's designed.

If the alarms sound & hotel management & fire authorities trace it back to your room, a lot of fire officers will bill the hotel as a non emergency call-out.

You will also either be arrested on the spot when the police arrive or you'll be summonsed later to appear on court. Either way, the minimum fine is £1000 and you have a criminal record.

I have seen it happen in several regions across the UK.

In all my years in hotels, the vast majority of guests are brilliant and behave plus respect others in the hotel.

But there's always the minority eejits who think just because they've arrived for a weekend, short break or whatever, they are entitled to do as they please and don't give a shit about others!

So they'll treat staff with utter disrespect, party hard in the bar and when advised they have had enough to drink, scream blue murder!

Or they party in their room, with their own booze they've brought with them, create house galore, forget the meaning of the word "quiet" and cause upset to others in adjoining or nearby rooms. As Night Manager in 4*/5" hotels for years, I've had my work cut out dealing with these morons!

Yes, I have had to resort to calling in Police help after being spat at or assaulted trying to get peace. Yes, I have asked people to leave in police presence and its' been enforced.

But it is the mess they leave behind; their attitude is "we've paid for a room, that includes cleaning!" But people urinate on the bed and carpets; in isolated cases, the even defecate in the bed (and not because of medical issues).

Hotels these days, especially the chains, will bring in specialists to clean a room when its been trashed and left so bad it has to be taken offline for 2-3 days. Usually, the culprits will be billed at least £150 for cleaning; in extreme cases, they get a legal bill for lost room revenue plus cleaning and a lifetime ban from ever using those hotels ever again.

Why would you think it is cling filming a toilet seat? Who takes cling film to a hotel???

"In all my years in hotels, the vast majority of guests are brilliant and behave plus respect others in the hotel.

But there's always the minority eejits who think just because they've arrived for a weekend, short break or whatever, they are entitled to do as they please and don't give a shit about others!

So they'll treat staff with utter disrespect, party hard in the bar and when advised they have had enough to drink, scream blue murder!

Or they party in their room, with their own booze they've brought with them, create house galore, forget the meaning of the word "quiet" and cause upset to others in adjoining or nearby rooms. As Night Manager in 4*/5" hotels for years, I've had my work cut out dealing with these morons!

Yes, I have had to resort to calling in Police help after being spat at or assaulted trying to get peace. Yes, I have asked people to leave in police presence and its' been enforced.

But it is the mess they leave behind; their attitude is "we've paid for a room, that includes cleaning!" But people urinate on the bed and carpets; in isolated cases, the even defecate in the bed (and not because of medical issues).

Hotels these days, especially the chains, will bring in specialists to clean a room when its been trashed and left so bad it has to be taken offline for 2-3 days. Usually, the culprits will be billed at least £150 for cleaning; in extreme cases, they get a legal bill for lost room revenue plus cleaning and a lifetime ban from ever using those hotels ever again.

. Footnote, a lot of hotels issue PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) to their housekeeping staff these days. Even on Night's, I'd have to kit up with full disposable apron, gauntlets, face mask and gloves plus use specialist cleaning products and sprays to clear up vomit when people left that "calling card" in the loos or even in the bar or lounge and......not tell anyone!

Would they do it at home?

It's disgusting that it's come to the point where that sort of equipment has to be used, let alone that people would do things to necessitate it's use in the first place. I wouldn't dream of deliberately doing anything in a hotel room that I wouldn't do in my own home, or be prepared to clear up as I would in my own home (and before anyone refers me back to my earlier "territorial" comment my tongue was firmly in my cheek).

I would hope that culprits that deliberately and wilfully leave rooms in the kind of mess that you describe are billed for it as you suggest. I bet these people would be the first to moan if someone desecrated their work or home environment.

As soon as I go in, I like to draw the curtains. Try out all the lights to create the perfect lighting. Then, start unpacking my bags, even if if I'm there for a short while. Will have to arrange all my toiletries and face creams on the bed side drawer.

I don't like pulling the duvets out from the bed. I like them all snuggled and tight til it gets a bit too hot. Then it's fuck it. Duvets out.

I need to bring out the slippers and the robes. I like to relax in my boxers. So, as soon as that is all done, I'm stripping down to my boxers and I lay in bed with the tv on.

...then, the night begins.

While I'm there it will look like a bomb site. When I leave, I remove the sheets etc and pile them with the towels in the bathroom. I used to work in a guesthouse when I was younger.

The first thing I do is find out which light switches go with what.

Then I have to take a shower

And I always leave the room as I found it; don't like leaving things a mess.

As a hotel manager, you are the type of guest we love!

You'd be amazed and possibly shocked at the horrendous state some rooms are left in!

Plus with hotels these days allocating only approx 20 mins to do a room & bathroom, guests like you are so, so welcome!"

Ok im going to be controversial here ... i know people are doing this because they think they are being helpful but i am intrigued as to what makes a hotel stay different from other service industries ...

for example i doubt if you used to be a waitress that you pick your own food up from the kitchen when eating out to save the waitress the trouble or take your leftovers and scrape them in the bin, i used to work in a shoe shop but i dont help myself to my size from the stock room just because i know that girl probably hates running up and down the stairs to fetch it, ive worked in a bar but i dont pour my own drink when its busy to help with queues, so why would i strip the bed, wash the glasses and empty the bin before i leave a hotel room?

I wouldnt go out of my way in any of these scenarios to make the job of providing the service more difficult ... but im also not going to do the job for them ... because bottom line is its a service i paid for ... you are not in your own home and having someone else take care of it for you for a change is part of the perks and appeal

When I arrive in usually open a window & close the curtains. Turn TV on & place everything I'll need for the morning out on the counter.

When leaving I always try to make the bed and little, tidy up, place the towels on the rack.

Rarely that organised at home haha

I don't go out of my way to clean the room I just like to leave it looking relatively tidy.

I'm referring to when people openly brag on here that they soaked the mattress through for example & left the room for the staff to deal with ~ to me that's not the service house keeping are paid for.

I also used to waitress / tend bar so I do tend to take glasses back to the bar & makes plates easy to clear.

For me it's about being thoughtful & treating someone / something how you would like to be treated.

I hear where you're coming from and I don't think anyone is saying they'd do the job of the hotel staff for them, just think it's a common courtesy thing to have a quick tidy round and not to leave the room in a state, or as RoxiAnne says, have the attitude that leads someone to come on here bragging about how they've trashed a room.

The difference between something like that and the other situations you describe is you how much you are able to help, and show that courtesy in those situations - for example you couldn't go and get the shoes you want as they're kept in a staff only area, or you're not allowed into restaurant kitchens or behind a bar to help yourself. I would however, and often do, take glasses back to the bar in a pub, or pile plates so they're easy to collect in a restaurant, which is no different really from having a quick tidy of a hotel room.

As we are in the process of getting ready to leave our hotel we always check we have everything and then tidy up.

All towels in the bath. Bed straightened so that they can quickly change the sheets etc all rubbish in the bin, cups back next to the kettle and the pot of sugar (no tea or coffee that is what made us human this morning) all the rubbish is in the bin and most importantly the TV remote back where it should be. Was going to say back where we found it but that would mean putting it under the bed
