Advice needed. Shall I leave my job?

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

I started a new job 3 weeks ago doing something I've never done before working in logistics for an engineering company.

The position came up as thd original logistics guy was off on sick and I was asked if I could come into the office and help out while hes on the sick?

I said yes even though I know nothing about engineering, logistics or wagons, sizes, loads etc etc. So Im a complete novice.

The second day the logistics guy decided to come back to work but they kept me there to help him out as his work load is huge and difficult for one person thats the reason he has time off on the sick as hes ready for a breakdown with the stress of the job plus he has problems at home.

Anyway....

I havent had any training as its not a role that ive gone into as im only supposed to be helping out? Posdibly if I do well maybe take over from the original logistics guy if he leaves because of stress.

Im finding it difficult to know what the hell im doing as i have no experience of it but im trying to pick things up best i can.

Im learning on my feet more each day but its really hard work and stressful with no real help or advice or any training.

Today i was lambasted in front of everyone in the office as i handt completed a task he set me thatcwas to his satisfaction in the timescale he had set.

I tried to explain that im still trying to find my way and find my feet but he basically said...

Ive shown you once! I wont be showing you again !

All this was done quite condescendingly and made me feel like shit in front of others. Who I may add also thought his actions was unfair and out of order for the reason i explained earlier. Me being new and no experience in this role.

Im really fucked off and I dont want to go back.

The jobs through an agency and i called them tonight on way home after work to explain how im feeling and he said he would speak to the main boss to see what the score is.

Obviously the agency want me to stay as they make money out of me as they tag on a couple of £ onto my hourly rate.

What shall i do ?

The money is pretty poor tbh and theres deffo no training on offer ever so thats not an option to ask for.

Shall i just leave and not bother going in tomorrow?

I can afford to cope if i left until i find another job.

Whats your thoughts guys ?

Stay or leave?

If it's something you're not interested in and they are offering nothing in return other than to make you feel like shit, tell them to do one.

My advice would be to do what feels right for you, not what randomers who don't have your best interests at heart say off an internet sex forum.

Have you any family / family friends that you can sit down and properly discuss the pros and cons with?

There's lots of questions you have to consider :

How likely are you to get another job?

How important is the money?

Can you see things improving?

Etc etc

Good luck in whatever you do! Make sure it's the right thing for YOU!

Sounds like he's taking his stress out on you and that's out of order.

You can take it up with his boss or HR or get your agency to get you something better.

There is an upside to working for an agency

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

Is it worth having a quiet word with the guy who upbraided you about his behaviour? You might get another position but its not guaranteed that it will be any better, and whether you are an agency worker or not, that mans behaviour was wrong, and he should be getting talked to by his boss about it.

If you're not that bothered about the job though, sack it off, citing his behaviour.

Was it the original transport manager who gave you the bollocking? I'm guessing so in which case I'd guess his nose is out of joint they asked you to cover him it's possible he's worried you'll get his job as they must have seen something they liked to ask you to cover. Personally I'd turn in tomorrow and ask who ever it was wanted you to cover for a meeting and discuss what's happened and how this guys making you feel. If you don't get the support you need then I'd be thinking it's time to look elsewhere. The last thing I'd do is just leave but then I'm a pig headed stubborn twat and won't let anyone beat me. Best of luck.

Question is ..without lambasting ..do you like the job ,can you see yourself doing it full time in a year or two ?....I've worked through agencies and tbh I've found a lot of full timers think your theee to have the piss took out of you because your a temp ....if the full time jobs possibly available and the money good enough then would you take the job ...sure as the nose on your face the attitudes change once your one of them ....and I know not everyone treats temps this way ,but a lot do .....good luck in your decision and future

No logistics guy is ok. Its his boss that is the bellend and also hes my boss too. But not the main gaffer. The guy who treated me like shit is 2nd in command so to speak.

But its not only his attitude but the fact they expect me to miraculously be able to do a job i have no exoerience of and not willing to give any proper structured training.

Only allow yourself to be treated like that if you have no choice.

If I were you and leaving was possible I would. I would also write to the person who spoke to me like that explaining why I had left and why I was writing to their superior with the same information.

Please don't feel like shit, you aren't, he is.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I'd leave and make it clear that the reason was unacceptable behaviour.

People often have unrealistic expectations of temps and it might be that your agency over-sold you to the company to fill the assignment - it happens.

Be clear with your agency that you want to do your best at the next assignment but it needs to match your knowledge and skill-set.

If it's stressing you out or lowering your quality of life and making you unhappy then get it tae fuck, however have you tried asking your management to send you on a course to get you trained up in your new role it doesn't sound professional or fair for them just to expect you to learn on your feet. That changes things a lot. I was going to say, go and see the next guy up and say youve given your all but are going to have to leave. But it sounds like it's your bosses boss who's the twat, leaving only the md to speak to. I think you've been treated badly, but the rot goes so far up, theres little way to fix it.

Live with the crap environment or leave. I.e probably leave.

Sounds like your agency is mugging you off!, you were contracted to do a lesser paid role I'm guessing, so now you've stepped up with no raise in pay! (The agency will be keeping that!!). And your being treated like shit by your "superiors" who are always off sick with stress. Sounds like a Mickey Mouse company relying on agency staff due to massive turn around and sickness. My thoughts would be.

A ask the agency for a raise or you'll walk.

B ask the head gaffer of the company to set you on and give you the training you need, offer to agree to a 12 month probation with no sickness and no major fuck ups.

C. Make a monumental fuck up that will go down in company history.

Join a union and good luck buddy

No-one deserves to be humiliated like that. It also classifies under bulkying and harrasment. If it is beginnibg to stress you leave but remind the employer and your agents that could choose to take legal action against them, in front of witnesses.

I'd ask for an appointment with the agency to discuss the issue. They're bound to have other jobs that they could offer you but as you say they do make money while you're in a position.

I wouldn't stay if it's going to cause stress. Are you signed up with other agencies? I'd get your cv updated and circulated and upload to online job websites like Indeed.

Good luck

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

Look at this way,

The guy doing the job along side you is suffering stress and he knows what the job entails..

You are not getting any support or training and getting a bollocking for it too..

Unless you wanna end up with stress issues too, get the agency to fund you something else..

They sound a bit of a poor company if they put their staff under such pressure.

Ok then I think it's fair to say the stress the other guys in is probably from the workload and working for this guy. Sounds a bad manager. If you feel able, speak privately with him and tell him never to speak to you again. Your job is at risk, I've lost mine in this situation but the alternative is to put up with it but you'll end up stressed and off like the other bloke. It's not worth it. Report him to HR if you think it'll help and talk to your agency. Wish you luck with it.

Go to the one above him. If the regular guy is going off sick because of stress etc. and his immediate boss is a total prick to you then if I were temping (and had shit all to lose) I'd go to the main boss and tell him/her what happened.

If nothing else it's the right thing to do. He shouldn't have spoken to you that way, certainly not in front of other people. His management skills are terrible and he shouldn't be managing other people.

Good luck

Jobs are like women mate !

When you've got a woman (job) - the rest want a piece

When you haven't got a woman an your single (no job) - none of them want you

Hope you can understand my examples and good luck with the future , me I'd let me boss go sick at me , then ask him if he's finished and laugh right in his face (having other people around makes it a whole lot funnier - I bet he explodes and go all red and will be about to break down and cry)

1 of my managers gripped me once 2 handed and 1 hand he had a rolling pin - he was shouting in my face and stuff and I calmly just said have you finished now and laughed - he got so mad ?? it was toooooo funny

I've temped and been in a similar situation and it's made me ill. If the guy you're working with has been off with stress then the writing is on the wall. Depending on your contract, WALK my friend, if it's casual employment you owe them nothing ... and if not casual, get on the phone to other agencies, line something up and work your notice.

Ps if your a contractor and you walk, you tell the job centre that the contract ended because you covered sick leave and the guy returned. They accept that casual work and contracts do end, Good luck to you x

"I've temped and been in a similar situation and it's made me ill.

They accept that casual work and contracts do end, Good luck to you x"

Thanks

Exactly

Probably because they don't want to hire properly and pay the wages of an experienced logistics manager?

So they just stick people in on peanuts and expect them to sink or swim as its no loss to them if you sink proberly as you are just another agency guy?

Who knows?

"I started a new job 3 weeks ago doing something I've never done before working in logistics for an engineering company.

Go in and calmly ask for an induction to the tasks you have been given. The person who spoke to you in that manner displayed their inner child ; remain an adult when discussing it. Doing this will show maturity, if it doesn't work then consider leaving.

I guess now you can see why the other guy is overwhelmed and stressed out.

If you want to stay, you'll have to tackle the issue head on, by approaching the appropriate person to ask for proper training and make it clear to the person who berated you that you aren't prepared to accept that treatment. Personally, I wouldn't bother, as toxic workplace environments are caused by poor senior management and it tends to be pervasive, you won't change it from the bottom up.

If you do decide to stay, give it a specific timespan in which you expect improvement, don't just go in every day hoping today might be better, you end up more invested and feeling more of a failure at the thought of leaving.

Have a word all round with those concerned - the agency and the work place. Treatment like that is unacceptable.

On the brightside - soon be Easter, which I believe is YOUR time. Just think how amazed they will be when they hear of your demise on the Friday and you walk back amongst them 3 days later.

IMO, never walk from a job unless you have something bigger and better to go after.

Is 'He' the guy who was off sick and is now back, if so he's obviously feels threatened.

Don't let the actions of one guy put you off, if it's a role you can develop into maybe it's worth sticking at???

Thanks mate but without any training in place or any structure in that place then nothing will improve. Thats why people havent stuck it as its too much of a mess and with that comes stress all for peanuts agency rates with no intention of them giving anyone contracts.

Ive sent sn email in explaining my reasons for leaving.

Lifes too short go be treated like shit and im too old for it too.
