A bus lane camera in Newcastle brings in £6000 per day in fines for the council. The top earning bus lane camera in the UK.

I agree with keeping the lanes clear, surprised so many still drive in them.

That's right, blocking a lane with a bus full of 50 people, with 1 car and a driver.

There are plenty doing it, as they got fined £31 million last year.

Not here

The bus lane in question in Newcastle was a newly implemented bus lane and the council had to refund over 5000 motorists as the sineage was inadequately lit at night.

The bus lane now runs alongside a newly installed cycle lane that was installed at huge cost and is a total white elephant.

Let's assume 1 bus carrying 25 people, 10 buses per hour = 250 people. I reckon more than 250 cars could use the lane in that time. Thus bus lanes make traffic worse.

Part of the idea is to make going in on the bus more attractive, by it being quicker. They want to dissuade as many people as possible from going into the centre by car, so the 'theory' is to make the bus and rail into town as quick and easy as possible.

Why then do they allow taxis to use bus lanes? In most instances, a taxi will be doing twice the journey.

The same camera was snapping folk twice ... once when in bus lane... when they realised and turned around to head back out ... it snapped them again so many were double fined .... and they've still got the cheek to increase council tax .... but that's Newcastle for ya

That made me think. If you did 80mph on the M1 constantly for 2 hours, going through 10 cameras, would you get 10 fines and 10x 3 points, or could you say you only sped once and just get 1 lot of punishment???

Yup, I got Westminster Council to back off as their own picture proved the sign was missing at the time!! The other problem in London is never knowing whether the lanes are 7am-7pm or anytime......so I just steer clear.

Each camera would be a separate offence so yes, you'd get fined 10 times. A chap I worked with had this happen 4 times on the same stretch of road with average speed cameras. Lost his licence on one journey.

I got done round the corner from GOSH hospital bit it's a shit junction. Bus lane stops one bus length from lights do you drive up and at the lights you want to turn left, you are sitting with six buses there all going straight over, were the road narrows to one lane so almost permanent congestion.

The bus drivers won't let you in usually. Nightmare! Lane finished at 10am I got done for having my left hand front wheel over the last three feet of line at 9:55am

And i'm the cunt??? Really??

But if you never slowed down, you'd have only done one offence? Otherwise if the police were following you, they could snap you 10 times with their speed gun and ban you?

A friend argued this very point as there are two cameras about 1/4 mile apart at Westcliff on Sea. Paid one, pleaded not guilty to the other, went to court & got off. Stating he did a steady 36mph past both cameras, cameras had almost identical time stamps. Judge ruled one offence had been committed only and that the fine had already been paid.

In Bristol some lanes are 2 hours in the morning or at night, some are 10 hours a day, and others 24 hours. the signs take 30 seconds to read, so the council reduced speed limits in some places to 20 mph, but only some places. So most people don't they just avoid them.

Recently been wondering if it breaks less rules to drive on the pavement

liverpool is awful for bus lanes, so many folk in 'em half the time i'm not sure if driving down 'em is kosher. i've been tempted before now

If there are no times displayed on the sign then it means that the bus lane is being enforced 24 hours a day so you aren't allowed in them at all

Yea those 24 hour ones are a brill idea as a whole lane of the road is empty for 23 hours a day

I understand the morning and evening rush hour ones but the 24's just add to the conjestion

The other one that bugged & caught me once was blue badge parking rules being different from one London borough to the next. Park on a single yellow out the way in Camden say, no ticket but one day building work so park over the other side of the main road out the way down a side road 100yds away get a ticket as its the next borough with different rules.

Ridiculous & confusing especially bearing in mind the ages of many blue badge holders. Ours was temporary for three years while our daughter underwent treatment.

i got snapped in cardiff before xmas for moving over to let a fire engine thru! even had a picture of the fire engine yet they wanted to still issue fine. gae it to company solicitor to deal with, soon got withdrawn

Yes, but there are so many different lanes with different times and you can't always see the signs (buses in the way for instance!) or simply fear you have missed them!
