So I just went to the doctor and got really obviously judged for having more than one recent sexual partner. This leads me to a couple of questions...

Is this something you (especially the couples) come across a lot?

And why do such judgemental people go into medicine???

They've seen it all, doesn't mean they don't have an opinion on it....having worked in hospitals, I can assure you that medical staff are as capable of gossip and judgement as everyone else.

What a terrible Dr, I've never been judged thankgod and if I have I've certainly not noticed. I think if I was you I'd feel upset about the whole thing. Change Drs no one needs that crap.

That's not great if that's genuinely the case - maybe you misinterpreted their actions / words / body language as I'd have thought most Doctors would have 'seen it all' by now?

But if they were genuinely being judgemental then screw 'em (figuratively speaking!) - they're not there to judge and if they do so they should keep it to themselves unless they felt you were at risk of doing yourself harm!

perhaps they're just frustrated. Surely it's better you interact with the medical profession than never go.

Always very nice down the clinic when I've been. But I've not had to discuss sexual health with my GP. I would hope they'd be more professional.

I'm surprised at your age to be honest, it's fairly 'de riguer' for youngsters to have some casual partners. I definitely caught my Doc off guard asking her advice about something to do with sexual health a while back, she just naturally assumed someone like me, of my age, would only be in a normal monogamous relationship and only have sex with one person...

That's what I thought, like would she rather I get pregnant/catch an std/get super ill and die???

I've also been judged super hard by doctors for being fat before and lectured to the point where I was in tears because I was trying to tell the bastard that I was there for a referral for eating disorder counselling!

Maybe I just have bad luck with doctors...

Doctors are human like the rest of us though of course in their privileged position of being party to people's intimate health concerns, you'd have hoped that their professionalism would override any personal feelings about someone else's sexual conduct. If they spoke out of turn I'd complain to the practice manager, not least because, as you say someone might otherwise be deterred from seeking medical advice and treatment for a potentially serious condition.

Or, sod them, change your GP altogether.

FWIW, if you can get to a designated sexual health clinic you are far less likely to encounter any criticism as they really will have 'seen it all before' on a daily basis. The last time I went to be checked they could not have been nicer and were more intrigued about how swinging 'worked' than anything.

He lectured me because I was married blah blah blah

It was hard enough to go and admit that I had a problem and that I needed help and support. I didn't need talking down too and being belittled. I already felt bad enough.

It was his job to offer support not judgement.

I'm sorry the doctor put you through that, withholding judgement should be one of the first things they're taught the same as every other carer and health professional!

This is why I go to the gum clinic and don't tell my doctors as I know they would judge!

Although even at the clinic I felt very judged a few months ago. The male Doctor asked how a Woman like me could get involved in 'this sort of thing' he then asked where I find my sexual partners.....

He then kept making 'jokes' like asking the nurse for another 'strip' (meaning paper) and pretending to undo his shirt and whistling 'you can leave your hat on'

Surely people go into medicine because they want to heal people.

Everyone judges. Doctors are people too.

I agree however that their opinion is irrelevant in this case. ...Although suggesting it would be safer to 'not fuck around' is a fact no-one can deny.

This is ghastly op.

I would consider changing doctors or as previously stated go to your local GUM clinic. You should never be made to feel that you bing judge. Shame on that doctor.

i've felt judged by one dr, when i was pregnant. luckily i only had to see him that once then i was passed onto the midwife team.

some drs aren't being judgmental sometimes, they just don't want you to risk your health in any way as they see it pointless as treating you and you not helping yourself.

but i'm guessing it is hard if you work in a job where people do things that go against your beliefs. i couldn't be a counsellor for peodophiles and listen to them for example.

I had to get the morning after pill around 16 months ago after the condom split with my then boyfriend. The doctor was really judgemental because the boyfriend wasn't there at the appointment and talked to me like I was an irresponsible little tart.

At my ante natal a doctor asked if I was on benefits why I was having another child.

I was a married woman on maternity leave and never been on benefits in my life.

Hmmm...wonder if he recovered from the tongue lashing he got. Didn't swear or raise my voice...go me!

omg, rude. i never said anything to my dr and was just glad to get out of there.

i got told to get sterilised by one midwife after i'd had 2 kids. not sure why but i did wonder if she was judging me coz it was obvious i was poor, and nobody else ever recommended it again.
