A feel good Friday thread

A restaurant in Madrid has hit upon a cool idea

The Robin Hood Cafe runs as a regular cafe during the day

By night it uses profits (and leftovers) from the breakfasts and lunches to serve up to 100 low income customers with free meals

It also offers free wi-fi and allows customers to use a mobile phone if they need to make calls.

It's all about sharing and the belief is that people should be treated with dignity and not just given food.

What a lovely idea

I hope it's a huge success

Yeah, of course it's great that humanity exists and we can all help people less fortunate than ourselves

The Robin Hood thing just made me think of this from many years ago though

In Derby, there is always somewhere for people to get a hot meal, and in winter months churches are available as a night shelter. Unfortunately, some folk still chose to sleep in shop doorways

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

There's a healthy chicken shop that sells meals to adults with a mark-up that is used to subsidise reduced cost chicken for school children during the day. The idea is that the fried chicken shops are cheap and popular but adding to the obesity problem.

There are a number of places that provide free or extremely low cost (no more than £2) meals for alcohol and substance mis-users to help with their recovery.

I also like the food waste reduction app (Too Good To Go - I think).

Pret also gives its unsold food to hostels every day.

I don't know if they choose ace.....a lot of places ban some of the people they are meant to be helping...it's not a easy one as they are likely to be alcohol or substance users or mental health conditions....but even the charities have rules and some of the poor buggers can't live within them

Some still do choose to sleep out, particularly when they can't get a place inside alongside their friends. It is harder to find wet hostel places now than ever.

Some supermarkets have containers that you can chuck tins or packets of things in which then go to various foodbanks. It's amazing how many packets of cheap pasta gets lobbed in there though. I usually buy an extra tin of tuna or stewed steak, it all helps in the end.

I give sweets, cakes and biscuits, alongside staples, as there are very few treats in food banks. I try and give things that can be eaten cold (like your tuna) as I got some feedback that people didn't have access to the means to cook, either because they couldn't afford the meter or didn't have a cooker.

As I said it's not a easy one....I have personal experience of this and it's a hard one to sort out.

I just really feel for the poor sods as they are really vulnerable people.

Yeah, there are people with substance abuse problems who are not willing to accept help and are going to be street dwellers until they do. Sad but true

Not sure what the situation is in other cities, but in Derby there are plenty of places that you can get a hot meal on a daily basis. I realise that some folk have no access to a cooker, but if you have a roof over your head, then the council will help you out with that, as well as some electric to get you back on your feet.

I live in a Salvation Army Housing Association flat which had literally nothing in here when I moved in 3 yrs ago. There were about 10 empty flats in the complex for about a year and I told some of the people who I know were homeless in Derby, but they couldn't be arsed to turn up and meet the housing officer. I gave up in the end

That's is part of the problem as they know they cannot hold a tendency....it sounds like they can't be bothered to go to meetings like that, but it's a case of they know it won't work out for them.

I wish I had the answers but all I have is empathy

Then surely some people have either substance abuse or mental health problems. I can't say that there's an easy solution, but there is always help there for those that choose to seek it.
