York and Edinburgh are my favourite cities. A town close to me is simply the best. It's a lovely market town with loads of character and is on the border of an AONB. It's also high in the top ten of safest areas to live

West Wales and Cardiff

"Bath

Tynemouth"

Tynemouth is an interesting shout - had that pigeonholed as an industrial port in my head (which can be cool places, of course). Must investigate

I like Bristol and Liverpool as cities.

I love the cultural stuff in Cardiff like the opera and it's parks, but I'm biased because I'm from there. Love Glasgow too.

There's a couple of towns in West Wales that are very much on the up, with small independent businesses coming in and music venues etc. I'm struggling to think of a smaller UK town that's the "best" though.

Nice to be positive anyway - thanks Miss I !

Reading isn't the best but it's a damn sight better now than it was when I first moved here about 25 years ago.

My son's dad and extended family live in York so he goes there quite often and he's always moaning that York doesn't have as many good shops as Reading does

He is a teenager though

I agree. Bristol is my old stamping ground and that too has a lot to offer. House prices and traffic let both places down though.. Oxford too has these problems, and also features in the book Crap Towns...

Interesting to note that the positive thread is getting rather fewer contributions than the one asking about the worst towns. Always easier to denigrate...!

I love Hitchin and wish it was more practical to consider living there. Lots of decent places to eat, lots of decent boozers, surrounded by beautiful countryside and 25 minutes on the train to London

Exactly. I think I like York so much as some of my favourite days out and memories are from York.

I went to York to meet my favourite author at the time etc.

I haven't been in many years though.

Its changed alot now Eve unfortunately.

Its more commercialised big chain pubs restaurants and shops.

Lost the quaintness of the little boozers and family owned restaurants and shops etc.

It also seems to seem "grey" that greyness you get from a town or city with no soul.

You know what I mean?
