I had a t25 bought it as a double side door mini bus, got it for a song then piled about 25k into it just to get the running gear, engine, insulation, front seating and breaks upto modern standards. Then another 5/6k to build the comforts into it. It was beautiful, Porsche alloys and seats, drove like saloon and turned heads wherever it went. Anyway the wife took it in the divorce and left me with a tent and a camp stove! .

I will however one day get another, I'd recommend the t25 synchro 4wd if it's gonna be a daily driver like mine was, if just for fun and shows then yeah go for the splitty but be prepared to shell out upto 25k for a good un, oh and get a prenup

If money is no option go for a splitting, only going up in value old VW's but as mentioned before get a good mechanic or breakdown cover! They seriously swallow money. Even the bay windows are fetching keen money, shouldn't lose money on it when you sell it! First thing on my wish list if I ever come into money is 66 split screen with safari windows, Karmann Ghia and a Porsche 356 C . All of these built to be driven slow until then I will have bomb around in a 326 Bhp beemer still at least it's quick

this...as part of what i do over summer we organize alot of festival campervan fields, what quite often happens is that suddenly arrivals slow down or drop off before you'd expect them to and 9 out of ten times it's because of a breakdown in the traffic system somewhere, and of those times it's normally an old v.w that's been sat running and overheated or gone bang in some other way....the second vehicle into glastonbudget after we opened the gates in 2015 just broke down and we had to push it into a bay, guess what it was

if you get one get one with a newer modern engine, something not air cooled that sounds like a brick in a washing machine and holds everyone up while you gad about being cool in a 'classc'

still, you get to flash your lights at fellow owners and give a knowing look across the carriageway as you compare break down companies, there is that camaraderie

they're at an age though where so many of them have been through the hands of so many owners chances are not all the owners have looked after it as well as they should have, different levels of love given to them, even now i see people in long static cues waiting to come into festivals with old air cooled vans sitting with them running and 20 mins later wondering why it's now not running and they can't see out of the cloud of steam, we go along now and ask people to stop running them if we're able to now

i imagine that it's not easy to find a good example that's not alot of money, and to me you can get alot more van for that kind of money in terms of options space and reliability, the only thing that's putting the price up is age and the image.

i get that not everything is bought for practical reasons though, i'm just a bit of a miserable sod who doesn't 'get' the whole vw camper thing

or air-cooled as being air cooled there is no water to create steam hehe. I get what you mean though we once had a 'pretty chrome ' engine... bad idea

smoke then

if they're a good machine, well looked after i dare say you'd get a good bit of joy out of it without too much issue but like everything that gets old, i suppose more tlc becomes needed, for those with that inclination though i can see how one might be fun as a project. just long as they don't fetch it to one of my gigs till it's reliable!

There are like delorains I guess it's all about desirability plus there's the social aspect of it and people's reactions when they see you (kids love em) there's plenty of old original parts available as well as new uprated stuff so you can always keep them up to scratch and they are REALLY simple to work on. Plenty of utube stuff

I have had T2's in the past, I now have a T5 and id never go back to an old bay, I love the look of the early splitty's and bay's but they are just not practical for what i want.

My T5 is a LWB twin sliding door T32 called "Buzzz" And the kids and I adore it. In the summer we are out most weekends at some festival or other. I have never had an issues with it, and do not regret trading my older air cooled campers in to get the T5.

If money was no object I'd keep an old splitty too as they are cool as fuck but realistically my vote goes to the newer models.

We stayed in one in Dorset for a couple of nights in January a few years ago when I was 5 months pregnant. It was great fun but really cold at night and a bit of a faff climbing up to the bed at night (and climbing down again every time I needed to pee)! It was a fantastic weekend but WHAT WERE WE THINKING?!?!?!
