"For those of you that use it for cooking, contrary to popular belief, it`s probably the most unhealthy thing to use in cooking food! There was an article on it on BBC Foodwatch or whatever it`s called a couple of weeks ago where it came out bottom of the best "fats" to cook with. The only good thing about it is it adds flavour!" Why?

"I wouldn't use coconut oil as lube, it clogs pores and has antibacterial qualities that can upset your natural balance, it's not safe with condoms either. It's great for hands, nails, cuticles etc but way too greasy for my face and hair." I only use it on my hair on wet frizzy hair weather days. It's a good repellent.

Saturated fats are not necessarily 'bad'... not sure about the cholesterol, but some foods raise hdl more than ldl so produce a net benefit. I need to research it one day. ...

" Due to the fact it's 92% saturated fat, It's not the BAD type. " And in fact some research shows the 'bad' type is not bad anyway, and better than the oils that have been pushed for 30 years!

" Due to the fact it's 92% saturated fat, It's not the BAD type. " It would appear that's it's less bad than the high saturated fat content would indicate but it's still much less healthy than olive oil or other vegetable oils. Recommended daily intake of saturated fat is 20 to 30 Grams. 2 tablespoons of coconut oil is 25 Grams.

From what I can gather; if you are using it regularly in cooking then there are much healthier alternatives.

Have a look at the British Heart Foundation advice. " A lot of such institutions have very out of date advice, eg the high omega 6 oils and spreads which they recommend as healthier are pro-inflammatory and may contains trans fats. They do not dispute the evidence on coconut oil - just say it's inconclusive as yet, but they are lumping in MCT's with all other saturated fats when they have very different effects in the body. For instance, a paper published in the BMJ last year re-evaluating the evidence for the oil vs fat hypothesis found it was not supported by the data: "Conclusions Available evidence from randomized controlled trials shows that replacement of saturated fat in the diet with linoleic acid effectively lowers serum cholesterol but does not support the hypothesis that this translates to a lower risk of death from coronary heart disease or all causes. Findings from the Minnesota Coronary Experiment add to growing evidence that incomplete publication has contributed to overestimation of the benefits of replacing saturated fat with vegetable oils....." Extra virgin olive oil is a mono-unsaturate high in omega 9 and I think still the most beneficial as eg a salad oil, but I believe it is damaged at high temperatures whereas coconut is not, so coconut is better for cooking? I'm still only just starting to research it so not sure yet.
