If you had a period of feeling a bit better have a think about what was happening then to make you feel a little more secure.

Mental health referrals can take ages; some parts of the country are poorly served for mental health services. Have a look at IAPT for your area and see if there are any self-referral routes for any of their services. There might be some group sessions and workshops that might help while you are waiting.

I found keeping a diary of how I was feeling, alongside what was happening that day, helped me to find my triggers.

The other thing that helped me was attending a particular lecture. I didn't go for it to help me as it was someone plugging their research and book. The central theme boiled down to 'it's OK to change your mind'.

It's the easiest and hardest thing to do and it's not about making a choice to be better (I get annoyed when people tell me I can fix my mental health by just choosing not to be bonkers). It's about accepting that we can change our minds about situations and the change may lead us to new choices that we feel happier with.

It is a most cunty thing, anxiety. One of the (numerous) issues that led to me being hospitalised last year. Thankfully between medication and meditation I'm not always on edge, the pit in my stomach isn't always there, seldom feel the impending doom and I'm not jumping at everything. Still get caught out, but between Breathing techniques and my 5 factor model CBT (not cock and ball torture, the other one...) I'm surviving it. I hope it passes, or at least eases off for you pal.

It is hard to deal with......

I find that being organised if it is work anxiety helps

Write a list of things that you are worried about then put in to 2 buckets - one that you can impact and onenthat you can't. With the ones you can't see if you can get a friend colleague to help with

The Ines you can free your time tick the boxes shall we say and it will make you feel positive

Anxiety is indeed a cunt.

I live with the looming threat of an episode everyday and can empathize with those early on in their diagnosis.

I have been through the system, and while extended therapy (dbt etc) has unpacked my cluttered mind, the anxiety remains as debilitating as ever.

Virtual hugs to all

I suffered with anxiety when I left the army. It was dreadful. My body ached , earache , constant swallowing , depression , you name a symptom and I had it. Luckily my gp was brilliant. She put me on a short coarse of Sertraline and referred me for cbt. The medication helped but cbt sorted me out. It got me thinking in a more rational way. It worked. Anxiety free ever since.

There is a way out , you just have to find the right door.

Near enough

I have anxiety.

Truth is my anxiety puts up with me and I try my best to give it hell so it buggers off!!

For anyone who isn't sure (this is how it was explained to me, for MY anxiety)

We ALL have anxieties, a natural anticipation or nervousness about situation and we all have a natural 'fight or flight' reaction to situations. Some who has anxiety anticipates and analyses EVERY situation and possible outcomes before they've even happened.

For example:

A simple trip to the shop to buy milk - 'have I got petrol' 'what shop am I going to' 'if I haven't got enough petrol I'll have to make sure I get some' 'should I just get milk from the garage' 'what if the garage hasn't got milk' 'do we need anything else' 'what if they don't have the bread/cheese/hametc etc''... see what I mean?

It's hard to explain

It's even harder to deal with it when stressed or trying to organise things. I run a business and sometimes my customers just don't understand that them being 10 minutes late puts my whole day out.

Sorry... I've waffled... that's anxiety too

I mr dns can feel your pain . as some posters have said already..

I do find meditation, breathing exercises cbt and the worry time/bucket all been valuable tools in helping me cope with out medication now .use different methods depending what seems to be working better on that day.still have odd days here there but it can be lifted now before it gets out of control once you start to see it happening.you will find something that works.just need exsplore and be open minded.

Mine was health anxiety. I turned 40 and had just left the army. My marriage had ended a few months earlier so I guess things just got out of hand. Every ache , cough or slight pain was in my mind a terminal decease. The longer my anxiety went in the worse it got. Every second of everyday my mind was my health. Strange as it may seem but when I googled illnesses I thought I had ( which was anything and everything ) a day or two later I had the symptoms. I didn't want to go to my gp as I didn't want to hear the worst. One day though I had terrible earache....it hurt like hell. So I went to my local surgery and saw my gp. She realised something was wrong. Not with my physical health but she knew just by chatting that my mind was all over the place. She was great. She understood. Anybody who has anxiety go get help its out there. It's free. Don't think you can get out the hole your in by yourself. You'll only dig yourself in deeper.

that's one of the best explanation of anxiety I've ever read .

i don't suffer myself to any degree past liking to be organised and have everything run smoothly, be that with my business cant stand it when a plan does go according to plan or in my personal life where i love to plan to so everything goes once more according to plan

Look at online CBT, like Mind Gym, to help you for now. As above, look up your local IAPT team and see if there are any softer options as you wait for referral.

I have anxiety due to thyroid disease.

Before I got diagnosed I tried so many things to deal with the anxiety and depression, counselling and anti depressants being a couple of them.

Realising it's a chemical imbalance because something in my body stopped working is a blessing and a curse.

But I always say to people that they should get their thyroid tested

Interesting you say that, I had graves when I was 17 and had my thyroid out when I was 19.

Never really associated the two but could be a link, it's strange as I have had phobic anxiety in the past yet I can meet someone say off here and have no problem, although anxiety does kick in till I've actually met them!

Amazing supportive advice you lovely lot!!

Just wanted to add- Depending on your area local Mind organisations (or other mental health charities) usually be accept self referral & offer a range of services. A number offer courses to help you understand what causes anxiety, your triggers & coping techniques for when you come across a trigger.

You can beat it xx

Sending hugs to all you suffering this debilitating illness. I suffer mildly with it but I have 2 young sons who suffer a great deal with anxiety and depression. Also they are disabled so the usual cbt therapy isn't any good for them.

Talking though and having some coping strategies does help. I know that mental health services are thinly stretched but hope you all can access something to help you through the worse.

If its any help to anyone, about Four months ago,i suddenly started to panic and become anxious over everything, completely out of character for me.Breaking down in tears, shaking, couldnt drive, couldnt go out the front door.I was a nervous wreck,i become obsessed with showering and bathing and bleaching everything in site,i thought this is how i am going to be like for the rest of my life. With the help of doctors and the right medication,i began to improve but a very slow road.Everyone said it will get better, but i never believed it.But it has got better and am more or less back to my normal self. This can happen to anyone at anytime.

At the moment I am going through a hard time but I realised this and went to gym

Also I am trying to see positives

Example mum had a big op and is recovering this means that she feels better, can go to gym more and look after old man

So for every negative there is a positive so if your struggling with negative switch it

I push people away because I dont want them to see me in that state - and the I think if they do they will feel sorry for me or start taljing about me behind my back - just pop in for cuppa , let them talk if they want to but dont question them about it - sometimes its good to just have normality even for just 15 min
