Writeoffs

Who knows anything about the rules for writeoffs?are garages allowed to keep your car if its been classed as a write off?what first appeared to be bodywork damage now appears to be more as they have stripped the bumper off.currently waiting on the outcome.

It depends what category of write off it is

But if it's A (unrepairable) it gets scrapped

If it's B (unrepairable) body work scrapped can salvage parts

C repairable but repairs cost more than cars worth. You can drive car again as long as you repair car ( you'd pay for repairs and have to complete various forms )

D repairable but costs of repairs and transport of vehicle more than cars worth. As above

If it's a or b the insurance company will deal with getting it scrapped

If it's c or d and you want to keep the car , the insurance company will pay out for your claim then sell the car back to you

The thing is my local garage would not charge me the rates this garage is estimating because it's through insurance they try to bump up the price of the estimate.

You are allowed to choose who YOU want to repair your car. You can negotiate with the insurance company, agree a price they are willing to pay for the car to be repaired. Then they give you the money and you get the car fixed.
