Saw my GP on Monday about persistent cough lasting 7 weeks during which he put me on antibiotics 4 weeks ago.

Nothing has worked. He's prescribed medicines pending results, only then will he decide which one is best.

Meanwhile, have slept almost continuously for two days, coughing has got worse, chest & stomach muscles hurt, can't get in to see him again till next week, feeling light headed, have to crawl up and down stairs otherwise I risk falling over, and have burnt more meals this week than in lifetime - fall asleep during cooking. Haven't burned the house down yet....

If its getting worse and you cant get in at the doctors, id suggest going to a walk in centre especially as seens as youve had it for 7 weeks and antibiotics havent worked.

Hope you feel better soon

I have had a chesty cough since early Dec, only just had a 1wk course of antibiotics from my Dr. I get a cold every winter that if I had antibiotics initially, I wouldn't be coughing like a lab rat for months after. Shocking really as when I get them they put everybody down but I have to carry on. Eat some greens, chew some oranges and apparently chicken soup does work OP.

It used to be on my notes that as soon as cough, cold or flu symptoms appeared, I was straight onto antibiotics, due to mild asthma and diabetes2.

But that's been removed, due to changes in medical thinking that antibiotics can only be prescribed after 3-4 weeks. That includes previous sufferers who now have to follow NHS rules! So, I know, from past experience, this could last up to 6 months!!

Sorry you're having such a rough time - why not investigate some herbal medicine as an adjunct, preferably via a good herbalist, but there are plenty of 'off the shelf' herbs that could help

Thanks. I might try that!

I've googled the meds my GP is considering; they're no more than painkillers, but nothing to kill any infection!

go A&E if you have to, or at least phone that NHS helpline on 111.

hope you're better soon but it sounds like you need more help than anti-biotics now.

Actually, that is a point - reading your original post again it sounds like you could be getting into sepsis so I would speak to 111 at least.

Feel better soon, OP!

My parents are recovering from whooping cough, it's been going around! See if you can get some codeine. It's a good cough suppressant!

There's an epidemic going on all over England with this cough. A total bitch. I've just recovered after 2 1/2 weeks with last week on antibiotics. The coughing fits were the worst I've ever experienced and my ribs hurt like mad from coughing. 7 weeks OP is far too long....go to A&E as suggested on here!
