Old people and racial prejudice

Whilst recognising that racial prejudice isn't the sole domain of the older generation(s), is there a (valid) argument to say that older people are more likely to be pre-disposed to making prejudicial comments more than, say, younger people are ?

Id say older people may use words that they didn't see as offensive years ago but definitely are now eg coloured but if someone tells them it's offensive and they carry on using it then that's just racist

Ps I'm not just saying older people use such terms

Racism can be the domain of older, younger and every other aged person.

It can also be the domain of white, black, brown or green people.

Some people are and some people aren't. I see it as that simple

there's a thing where people are biased towards who they actually know and interact with. i'm guessing if older people don't interact with anyone from other races then they would have this bias...can't remember what it's called though.

if my dad is anything to go by, I'd say there is definitely a valid argument..

and in his advancing years he is actually getting less tolerant..

I cringe at some of his posts on FB but he often cant see he is doing anything wrong as that has always been his mindset

Getting old and becoming isolated?

Racists are just that, it's nothing to do with age. Perhaps environment and lack of travel might have an influence?

no. everyone has this bias.

but, at a guess, older white people will not have interacted with other races so much so be more biased towards white people being friendly, good etc.

I do think that there is a grain of truth in that.

The older generation were around in a time when it was culturally acceptable to use racist terms whereas these days it most definitely isn't.

Using racist language isn't solely the preserve of white people though. My best mate is Jamaican and I went to his mum's 90th birthday party a few months ago. I was the only white person there in a room of around 2-300 Jamaicans. If I had a pound for every time I overheard someone say "who's the whitey?" I would be rich!

Totally agree Kinky. Some of the most racist things I've heard on TV have not been from white people. Rio Ferdinand comes out with some quite racist stuff sometimes.

No not at all

It stems from a comment made by a family member earlier

I can kinda see where she was coming from, but there was also a side of me that thought old age was just an easy excuse to hide behind

I think so. They were brought up in a different time when racism was 'the norm'. Some are just set in their ways and genuinely don't understand why they shouldn't say certain things. Old age seems to be an acceptable excuse for acting like an arse though.

Older people make more overt racist or prejudicial comments, younger people know how to conceal it.

The Garden of Eden in Beautiful North Wales

Surely our ancestors worked, fought, bled and cried to keep our country free?

It's your government and politicians saw fit to give it all away!

Right or wrong, your mother's, father's, grandmother's and grandfather's gave their all for us... only to have it all thrown back in their faces.

It's only my opinion, whether it's right or wrong I really don't care but I do think that we've all been conned by the powers that be.

P.S. I don't consider myself racist, I actually admire the people that travel thousands of miles tof feed their families when we have people born and bred in this country that can't be bothered to lift a finger for their's...

Funny old world!

Black and Asian people fought in the wars for the freedoms of a motherland where they could then be abused because of their colour.

Racism operates on different levels. WE ALL have prejudices, we're all a LITTLE BIT racist. We ALL have the ability to do our best not to offend or hurt others. How much older does the person have to be to use the excuse of it being acceptable for them given we have had a growing multicultural society since the last World War?

st neots, living in Albufeira-Algarve-Portugal

mmm... tried to resist jumping in ! but are are my 2 cents : Racism is possible, prevalent, and even a normal part of some cultures! Generally speaking , "racism" in a result of ignorance, however, it is a bit more complex that that! Its not only about skin tone, in fact most of the time its about cultural differences and/or, incompatibility ! what about the unmentioned elephant in the room? Religion !

Personally having travelled and lived on different continents ,being fluent in two languages , and getting by 5 others , I have concluded that the white race are the least racist and generally more tolerant !Africans and Asians are by far more racist! Problem with Europeans , is they have been indoctrinated with the guilt complex of having exploited other people(empire..bla, bla, bla...) but can we be responsible for what our ancestors did ? No ! so get over it ! Now intolerance does not automatically equate to racism, and being intolerant is not automatically a bad thing either! The problem today is PC! (political correctness). I ditched F.book years ago ,because I couldnt stand the BS on there! We live in a time where perception is more important than reality and the truth, so no one speaks their mind, but rather what they think will be PC and liked ! This is especially true for younger 60- people who live on,off "social" networks ! Now the mentioned "older" , perhaps 60 or 70 + people are from a time where speaking the truth was a value, and regarded as such! OOps too long a comment.... so let me leave you some food for thought !

I am not tolerant in regards to Islam !

Why? Because its intolerant and doesn't respect others ! Example ;

-Doesn't respect women , and considers them inferior to men !

-Considers non muslims inferior human beings.

-Not to mention what they think an do about any type of LGBT,....or swingers for that matter !

So..... am I a racist for refusing to accept discrimination and intolerance , that leads to people being repressed killed, beaten and mutilated every day all over the world ?

The same examples of intolerance (women, LGBT) applies to Steve Bannon.

Is there a general consensus of racist terms? Seems to be the same as with anything these days, some people are ok with some terms and others are offended.

I don't mean this in a disrespectful way. Clearly some terms are offensive to everyone. But it really is difficult to know anymore.

It's not just about the specific terms used. My racist grandmother used to call me the Coolie Gal - very racist. A white, English, relative (by marriage) was very good about avoiding using such racist terms but would ask pointedly if people like us eat normal food without spices and other such comments.

I understand that. This week we were having a discussion with a Hindu friend about what he does and doesn't eat. But we were all clear about it being a genuine question because we're all friends.

Unconscious bias.
