URGHHHHH I am FRUSTRATED!

And it's not about sex

So, I'm trying to get out of the food & drink industry and into receptionist work. I have a brilliant work placement that's unpaid, but I'm really enjoying it and it's an environment that I want to work in, everyone's really lovely and I'm gaining a ton of experience and it's just brilliant... but I still don't have enough experience to land a paid position. Obviously everyone, right from work coaches to friends, are being encouraging about the fact that I'm working to what I want to, but I'm just impatient, frustrated & a bit annoyed at myself.

Career changes are always, frustrating. I've helped a few friends get jobs and its the same issue all the time experience. Talk about chicken and egg.

You are doing the right thing, getting some. Keep trying, seek out independent places that could give more experience for a bit of free work if you can afford it.

Offer to help in other roles, if they'll train you.

I've been in my job for 2 years as an agency worker... love it to bits but they're not taking on due to cuts!!!!!! Frustrated... AYE!!!!!

I got a masters in electronic engineering and that was all if ever wanted to do but there were no jobs out there so I joined the civil service as a stop-gap until I found something. 15 years later I'm still in the civil service and I can't see myself ever leaving now as I've invested so much in my pension now.

I'd love to get back in to electronics but that field moves so quickly that everything I learned at uni in the late 90s / early 2000s is 25 years out of date now, I'd have to start from scratch all over again.

I wish I'd tried harder and looked further afield to find the job I really wanted at the time. Stick at it OP, don't give up on your dream

first off im going to say good for you on liking your different route within the jobs field

keep it up if you like doing it

however you may not like this

it maybe free work what your doing but thats all its going to be you may get a verified job reference from them.

your job coach will be glad your doing that as they are paid on an off flow target so of coarse they will encourage you

a further query here have you got a typist and shorthand qualification

One way to obtain administrative skills is by earning a certificate in clerical studies or office assistance, which can be earned in about a year and generally covers data entry, switchboard operation, word processing, payroll accounting, business math, customer service, office management and office software.

sorry for this but your free one will never provide this and neither will your jobcoach or even the work program providers they are simply paid to get off low targets or foer sanctions against people

How long have you been doing your placement for? And your working your 'normal' job to? Must be very tiring but it takes balls to change careers so well done you and don't give up, it will be so worth it

I took on a second job in November but have just resigned. I loved it but it was a zero hour contract with no fixed hours which was interfering with my 'me' time so it had to go

Have you thought about temping to get a foot in the paid door so to speak? Usually they overlook less experience as they have less risk thank taking you on properly. That then is Paul d and on your cv and helps a lot. Good luck

i used to work in retail management and then in an office while volunteering at a local theatre and at festivals...it took a long time but constant networking and being seen at events has helped me enter a career i have a passion in and finally be paid to do the stuff i do at festivals.

patience and perseverance is the key...sending out cv after cv is good too, also try linkedin..very good networking tool and jobs are advertised on there as well good luck

And doing voluntary work will look great on your CV. Hopefully, you should get good references as well.

I'm fed up too.!! I want to get into office work Admin Assistant etc.. but keep getting turned down.

I am registered with agencies and I apply but nothing! .. I took an NVQ 2 in business administration but nothing yet. I'm in the car/HGV industry and want to get out of it. it's insecure work and can feel the sliding doors on the jobcentre chewing at my bum

Take all the training they have to offer, if you can gain certificates all the better. Keep a record of everything you've achieved for your CV. When you feel the time is right ask to speak to your employer detailing all your talents and why you think they should employ you - i doubt they will mind and should see you as someone who is driven to move forward.

Most importantly, be patient. If you feel you're not going to get anywhere take your CV and your skills to someone who will better appreciate your skills.
