The Chinese invented a way to tell the time using incense sticks.... they could literally smell the time... genius..

They would light the fists fruit scented stick at 5 am. Each stick burnt for an hour. So Half burnt then half past. Hence we get half past grape. Quarter past lime. Etc.

the smell changed at precise points throughout the day... either that or they hung a clock on it...
