Anti spitting hoods...

So, I was listening to the news this morning and they said that they are considering supplying more police with anti spitting hoods. There has been an increase in people who are being arrested spitting at police officers, and more so spitting blood!

Someone has stepped up and said that they are inhumain.

What are your thoughts?

I shall pop back later with my own view.

Discuss.....

Edinburgh

Spitting is revolting.

It's pretty hideous that they're even having to think about that but I have no issues on them protecting themselves in any way they see fit.

I think spitting on anyone is a fucking scummy thing to do so I understand the need to hood. My concerns would be if it is used as punishment or to simply gain compliance, much like tazers can be misused. Oversight is key.

How do they know who will be spit and who won't. Will it be they will put them on everyone they arrest? Will they be sterilised between arrestees?

I've just had a look at them, they are one use and cover the whole head.

Saves being spat at.

If a person is volatile aggressive and spitting / lashing out then sure

Behave like an animal then expect to be treated as such , nothing to do with is if humane not like they are going to die from having one put on them

Would it not be easier to offer police officers visors that they can drop if they feel under threat of getting spit on rather than trying to restrain someone and get a hood on them while they are being all spitty?

I don't think they wait to see if someone spits.

But they have to get within spitting distance to get the hood on

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

Having a close family member that served in the MET, I can fully understand why there use is necessary..

Apart from spitting being disgusting, the amount of diseases that can be transferred in spit is horrendous..

If someone is being arrested,it usually means they have done something wrong, potentially deprived someone else of their human rights in one form, therefore someone being arrested shouldn't expect kid glove treatment..

If you haven't done wrong and are being arrested (shock horror, it does happen occasionally), you probably will be shitting yourself and do exactly as you are told, as would most normal people..

As for compliance, the current issue cuffs which I believe are nicknamed persuaders can make even the most obnoxious be very compliant..Having been put in a pair, I can confirm how much they hurt if you fight against them or if they are twisted by the officer...

.

I personally can't see what the issue is with a net bag over the head of the absolute worst scumbags that are likely to spit.

Bottom line, you do wrong then you deserve what you get..

Good idea in principle but it also gives the crooks more things to grab hold of if they have a tussle with the cops, no doubt they will scrap the idea when the cops get strangled with them

As promised, I'm back!

Thanks for the responses.

I totally agree with them having them, with strict guidelines on use.

Spitting is totally vile and when they bite their own mouths to spit blood, it's even worse. Think of the horror that officer had to go through until they find out they are all clear of possible diseases.

The hood would be put on from behind so as not to be in the line of fire.

As for the person who mentioned a visor being worn by officers? (Sorry not being rude, just didn't want to reply to everyone). If you've ever worn body armour you'd know how heavy it is, coupled with other equipment they have to carry it would be too much of a burden.

After having witnessed the arrest of a violent man at the weekend, I'm all for it.
