HPV vaccine

It has been reported in our local newspaper that a mother is furious that her 13 year old daughter was given this vaccine without parental consent.

The mother didn't want her daughter to have it after reading a scare story in a national newspaper but the young girl did want it.

The rules around this apparently say that the child can consent herself if she has been given all the information about it and can make an informed choice and that parental consent isn't necessary.

Whilst I don't have children, I think it's right that the girl was able to choose to have it. It's her body therefore her choice and the majority of girls her age are more than capable of making such an important decision for themselves.

Where would you stand on this?

My daughter will be coming up to the age to have it in a couple of years and I'd give her the choice after giving her all the information, it would then be her decision. I'd make sure she had the pros and the cons then discuss it with her and see how she felt.

At 13, she is able to make an informed choice. The newspapers have a lot to answer for scaremongering vaccines. The MMR has been around a long time, and thousands of babies have been vaccinated and I have yet to have it proven to me that anyone's child suffered or was affected by it in any way. Conversely, I have some friends who were vehemently opposed to the vaccine and refused to let their children be inoculated. Then when one went down with mumps, they pulled their hair out in panic over the possible health consequences. Fortunately, after a few (painful for their son) weeks, he recovered and the only lasting damage was 2 weeks off school. It just goes to show that parents don't always know best.

It's the daughter's body and her own health, therefore her choice.

I think it's her daughters choice, if she wants to protect herself or not. I don't know this story but there's a few anti vaxers out there. Maybe her mother is one of those.

Anti-vaxxers are everywhere, including Mr Trump. It's good that the girl was able to decide for herself and saw through the scaremongering.

Any child that is 'considered to be competent' can give consent for any treatment they receive. (In law known as the Gillick test) That's the legal position so the mother really has nothing to complain about.

Fuck the MMR debate, it's a non issue. The guy who linked it (falsely) with autism has been struck off.

HPV vaccines are routinely offered to 12-13 year old girls apparently

"HPV vaccines are routinely offered to 12-13 year old girls apparently"

And it's a good thing too in my opinion.

The vaccine is effective against 2 strains of hpv. Those two strains are responsible for 70% of cervical cancer!

If having a small injection can reduce the risk of cervical cancer by that much then it's worth it.

I had my first round of treatment for abnormal cells at just 18 years old, these days screening starts at 25. At age 35 I was diagnosed and successfully treated for stage 1a1 cervical cancer.

In both cases I was treated as my doctor ignored the current NHS guidelines. I'm very lucky to be here to tell the tale

I think it's great that the girl took control this way.

The media were responsible for spreading the noxious lies of Andrew Wakefield and the MMR jab. And we're still facing the effects of that as a society.

I believe that the hpv vaccination is a must after my friend's sister died at 30 years of age from a cancer it could have prevented

Gillick competence overrides parental consent in all scenarios relating to the individuals health. Infact parental consent is actually not a legal requirement but an ethical one and a healthcare professional can always overrule parental wishes if it's justifiable.

Plus newspaper scare stories!!! Really the mother needs to grow up and know the factual risks associated with her daughter not having it.

Struck off and discredited and is now having meetings with the new president of the US which is a bit terrifying.

i'll be advsing my daughter to have it.

i do think schools shouldn't be allowed to over rule parents wants.

they're always trying to cop out of responsibility for kids and it pisses me off.

i take my responsibilities on and if something happened to my daughter because the school overrode what i wanted i'd sue them. fuck their bullshit 'laws' there's ways round every single one.

But the school didn't overrule it, the girl decided for herself what she wanted to do. Nothing whatsoever to do with the school.

if that girl needs medical treatment, such as hospital intervention, who has to give permission for that?

I'm not sure how that's relevant, but if parents are going to make such moronic decisions that will bring harm to their children then they deserve to be overruled.

Now you're presuming people make decisions coz they're uninformed, rather than making them for what's best for their family.

It's totally relevant. My daughter is my responsibility, and if she needed medical treatment based on having that jab (which is a valid possibility) then it's down to me to be responsible for her.

Like i said i'll be advising my daughter has that jab, but it's her decision and as an adult i'm just here to advise her and be responsible for any effect from that.Hopefully all she has is some protection from cervical cancer afterwards but there are other side effects and probably some unknown ones to be discovered also.

If parents say no and the health care professionals say yes, it goes to Court.

But he caused an awful lot of damage and a lot of people especially in America believe his one little discredited study over loads of other sound studies. I don't get it.
