There is a vegetable shortage and supermarkets are rationing lettuces, 3 per family as european vegetable stocks hits by extreme weather, even with brexit uk rely on europe for food, have you got enough vegetables for dinner for few days ahead?

We're not out of the single market yet.

I don't believe there is a real shortage either, it's just an excuse for the supermarkets to raise prices and make more profits. I've just been in my local asda and they've got so many iceberg lettuces they've reduced them to 15p each

"It will cost more to import now as we are out of the single market."

Why do we need to import? Plenty of market gardeners. I suppose it must be different in London or other big cities, but I have friends with allotments who give me so much seasonal fruit and veg, I have to pass a huge amount along to other friends. Post-war Germany clawed back to where it is now by promoting buying German goods and produce over imported ones. That, coupled with a strict re-cycling regime, helped the economy to recover. We just need to re-educate ourselves for when we shop. I have seen (massively expensive) strawberries in the supermarkets, but I will wait until I can get them locally. Cheaper and taste better.

If the supermarkets weren't so fussy about the way vegetables look, then we may not have had a shortage of them. But they have to be the correct size shape and colour. Outrageous, wasteful and foolish.

Sorry to disappoint you but but Germany is still in the single market and we have the same problem here.

Not seen any rationing yet but Peppers Cucumbers, Lettuce, Courgette, and Broccoli are in short supply and prices are sky high here.

The cause is floods followed by snow in the Almeria and Murcia regions of Spain which produces around half of northern Europe's needs.

Not wasted the "imperfect" veg are sold by discount supermarkets, street stalls etc. For example the perfect £2 Leeks don't taste any better than the 49p ones in Lidl, but the public want perfect.

Perhaps we could grow our own!

Troubke will start when all the eastern Europeans go back and we have no one to pick the veg. Very few English people want those jobs in my experience. "

I've done it before, often paid as piece work, back breaking job that was. I did ok, but most of the english dropped out as they just couldn't match the speed, so were being paid less for the same time and spat their dummies out.

"It will cost more to import now as we are out of the single market.

I'm going to grow my own lettuces and tomatoes this year. If they survive I'll have a go at other veg and maybe some fruit. "

I grow potatoes in potato sacks - it's really fun when you come to harvest them as well as tasting great! Tomatoes too in a tub or grow bag on my patio. If you plant lettuce in an opened up grow bag, stagger planting times of the seeds so that they aren't all ready at once. Had failures with carrots though....i also keep four chickens and now getting (now the days are getting longer) three eggs per day. (one chicken has gender issues so she crows whilst the others lay eggs!)

Costa Blanca Spain...

Just to update.

Been out shopping this morning here in Germany.

Supermarket shelves generally are reasonably well stocked but a bit lower than usual, however prices have rocketed. Today I have seen courgettes and Aubergines at 7.99€ a kilo, red peppers at 5.99 kilo and individual iceberg lettuce at 2.50 each. Curly leaf lettuce was an eye watering 3.50 for one. The local Aldi was a bit cheaper but their stocks were also a lot lower.

...and yet tonnes and tonnes of food is thrown away every day. A couple of weeks a go, The Real Junk Food Project in Leeds intercepted 600 tonnes of food that was destined for landfill, in just one week. There is so much surplus food, they have even opened a 'supermarket' on a pay as you feel basis. There is no shortage, there is over supply, poor management and rediculous laws surrounding the processing of food.

"If the supermarkets weren't so fussy about the way vegetables look, then we may not have had a shortage of them. But they have to be the correct size shape and colour. Outrageous, wasteful and foolish.

Not wasted the "imperfect" veg are sold by discount supermarkets, street stalls etc. For example the perfect £2 Leeks don't taste any better than the 49p ones in Lidl, but the public want perfect. "

Loads are wasted. They throw away tons every year. It's only the odd few that are saved.

What it really boils down to is the willingness of the consumers to pay the 'real' price for food.

Other lettuces are available and no one is going to die if they can't get hold of an Iceberg lettuce in February.

Eating seasonal stuff is cheaper.

However, we are in the "hungry gap" where the last of the autumn veg has gone and the new veg hasn't yet grown - it lasts until March traditionally, when the broad beans and spring cabbages are ready.

You will still have storage crops though, which includes all the root crops harvested in autumn/early winter, and fresh you will have kale and cabbages.
