That thing you don't know you do

So, apparently, I have this tone

I have this tone when I am being direct with someone that can be quite aggressive

I don't know I am doing it - I am the least aggressive person I know. I rarely take the huff and am always open to compromise.

The OH has pulled me about it numerous times and so have a couple of colleagues.

Well today I saw it. I saw my Dad to it to a thoroughly lovely sales assistant and, like me, he had absolutely zero perception that his tone had changed.

So, is there anything that you do that you do subconciously and others have pulled you about ?

Male half here. In England I've discovered when energetically chatting people have perceived it as aggressive. Totally unintentionally

Yes.

I have a no nonsense serious face.

But somebody pointed out to me that I look at people in their right eye, when I talk seriously.

I asked what they meant.

And since they pointed it out In now very aware of it.

Oh and apparently I have very expressive eyebrows when I am pissed off

One colleague calls them my 'cartoon eyebrows' cos she's convinced that when I'm pissed off they actually hover above my head like they do in cartoons

.

My face is very expressive and I roll my eyes a lot. I didn't realise I was quite so easy to read until a colleague pointed it out after a meeting in which I had 'evidently disagreed' with a couple of the points. I do try and hide it now but occasionally I slip up.

Part of your 5 a day

At work I always like to make things about myself... i.e group discussion could be talking about rude people and I will say well at least I'm not rude. I'm not selfish nor am I vain which I find very odd about myself

I feel like I do it in order to be accepted as I'm the youngest in the office

People can get very uncomfortable.

Kind of a cross between not knowing if I'm joking or if they are going to be one of those "statistics " you see on crime watch......

"Considering this is called 'things we don't know what we do'...but we all know we do them.

"

Only after it has been pointed out to us ... I think that's the crux

It's like I know I talk bollocks when I feel I am meant to give a meaningful response ... and end up waffling on about all kindsa shit

But I was genuinely unaware of the aggressive 'don't fuck with me' tone that I apparently have when being direct with someone

Male half here had that problem, trick is a big smile, people even miss insults if you say it as you're smiling at them

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I used to put my right hand into my left bra cup and cup my breast when I was concentrating... until someone pointed out that I was doing it in a meeting.

Apparently I have a "tone" too... its especially noticeable when I'm very serious, and if I talk quietly it is, so I'm told, extremely scary.

We must be soothing ourselves in some way.

One of my staff team has started to write my put downs on the white board in the office as they are amusing.

My husband pointed out to me that, when watching television, I put my hands between my legs.

I was doing it tonight, as I watched a film.

The wife says I have a weird aggressive/intense stare (weird because I'm not remotely aggressive) that i do when I'm annoyed or talking passionately about something.

This is something I also have a problem with (minus eye rolling) so really need to work on getting myself a poker face
