i have just filled in the form to confirm it was me - then i think i get offered that or a fine - im skint so i will take the course if offered - apparently i was doing 37 in a 30 mph zone - ouchy

The courses are nearly as expensive as the fine. Take the points and spare yourself the day you'd have to take off to attend one.

Work out the cheapest option. Some insurance companies raise premiums with points. Some don't.

Will you lose pay to go on the course.

It's been cheaper for me to accept points in the past. If I don't work (to do course) I'd lose more money.

The course is actually very good and would recommend it to anyone...it is, from memory, about £20-£30 more expensive than the fine but when you factor in increased insurance premiums if you have points on your licence it's worth the extra cost now to save in the long run.

Points count for 5 years and you have to tell your insurance company or your insurance is no longer valid.

I got caught going 42 in a 30, took the course.

I also found it interesting, it's worth it in the long run.

if i get enough notice for the course i can ask for that day to be a day off - money wise if insurance is affected be better and i dont really want the points -

For cases that go to court that may be the case but for spot fines such as being caught just over the limit the fine is the same for anyone regardless of earnings.

google says - you dont have to declare at the time as going on the course isnt a conviction - but on the renewal of your premiums is best to mention - some up the price some dont but have the option to move elsewhere anyway -

The fine for a sp30 speeding fine is now £100 if you were clocked doing 37 you may not get the chance to do the awareness course. I got done last year and asked if I could do the course I was told no as I was to high over the 30 limit. I was doing 38.

I'm doing speed awareness course Tomorrow. I was caught doing 42 Ina 30

The fine was £120 plus 3 points or the course £85. They offered evenings and weekends to sit course.

it seems its 35 to 42 mph to be eligible for the course - wonder that means if you were doing 34 you get away with it or a lesser fine ?

They have to notify you within 14 days of the offence otherwise it's null and void...although think the letter has to be dated within 14 days of the offence otherwise everyone'd say they didn't get it!!

You get to choose a date (from a list of days the courses are running and whether you want morning or afternoon) and you have a certain amount of time in which to attend the course.

The course is expensive, but it's quite interesting and nice to have refreshers if its been a while since you passed your test.

The course i attended was informative, given in a non patronising way and nothing gruesome was shown. Coffee and biscuits provided.

The course makes you more aware, which can only be a good thing

Courses are usually run 7 days a week and on evenings as well so no need to lose a days work.

Can be worthwhile course but only if you approach it with the right attitude

BTW. Waze is a great app. Particularly if the cameras aren't always there as people update it regularly. Avoids and redirects from jams too

Most do as they use the same underwritering systems to calculate risk. Also note your current insurance is based on the statements you made upon application i.e. number of points on licence. If you do not tell them of a material change your insurance could be invalidated.

Shop around for courses, some can be as much as £20 cheaper than others.

And no points, most insurance companies will not ask if been on an awareness course just ask about endorsements.

I got caught by a speed camera recently for the first time too!

(doing 46 in a 40 zone!)

I was very upset about it.

I felt like a criminal when the letter came through my postbox, I've never been in that kinda trouble before!

Anyway... I paid £95 for a speed awareness course that I will be going on in 2 weeks time.

It hardly saved me any money, as the fine would have been £100 and 3 points on my licence , however I really didn't want points on my licence as my car insurance would have gone up, so the course it is.

Now I don't normally mind being told I am a very naughty girl OR being *flashed at*! But those things tend to only happen in swing clubs! Lol.

it is a myth especially if you are in a zero tolerance area .I got done for doing 34_ in a 30 zone up here in n east .they are now doing a purge up here for mobile users .

Used to be £60. It's now £100 but the course costs £90 and you have to take a day off work.

Balance that with the three points that last for 3 years.

No legality in this. It's discretionary. It certainly doesn't apply in Wales!!
